A few of us are going to Starvy in the morning. The ice is safe and the fishing has been pretty good in several places. Most reports indicate the perch are pretty deep, like 40 to 50 feet. My brother said the rainbows have been biting well and they are usually suspended in the 12 to 20 foot depths if last year is an indicator.
It's been very cold, like -16 this morning, so be prepared. I'm going to take my Quickfish just in case there's a breeze to go with the frigid temps.

Good luck.....Mike

I hit Rabbit Gulch on the first. It was -3 when we got there. Only landed 5 trout in our group, talked to others with the same results. We did get into the perch on Saturday over by the bridge. Can't wait to get back on some perch.

We also went by the bridge on the first. Being a holiday, it was much like a Saturday with many others having the same ideas. It was cold, but sunny and very little wind so really quite a nice day. Unfortunately the catching was not fast. We caught two rainbows and saw others do about the same. We pushed off around 12:30. Hope the catching is better for you in the morning. Good luck.

There was a report from a week ago about a guy out there on a snowmobile. The guy that posted about it said he thought the guy was crazy. I think by this weekend it should be good, at least I hope so.

I fished it yesterday 1-2-2013 and the ice was 6" to 7". I wish I would have took my atv, pulling my tent sled sucked. By the way only 4 small groups of people including myself fished it Wednesday, I stayed all day and had a blast.

I was there when the guy on the snowmobile came out. There was a good 4 inches of ice then, which was on Sunday. I would think you would be okay by now.

He came down the steep hill by the bridge. He got stuck on his way out almost at the top. When we left looked like he high centered on a hump throwing dirt all over.

I remember you saying that now, thanks for repeating it, It's hell getting old[crazy]. Do you think an ATV could make it down and back up that trail?

I was thinking about that earlier today and wishing I would have paid a little more attention to it. I think you could get probably get down if you took it slow, but that hike up was fairly steep and difficult in the snow. We were having trouble in a couple spots trying not to slide back down the hill pulling our sleds on foot. Maybe someone can chime in on this that has had some prior experience there with an ATV or that can recall the hill conditions better?

I wouldn't recommend taking an ATV down and back up the hill at the bridge. It is steep, rocky and slick right now. I think you would just tear things up. You would be better off getting on at Rabbit Gulch and riding over. Ice conditions are great right now but as always use caution everywhere but especially near pressure ridges and near the bridge pilings.
I noticed a snowmobile on the ice in the Knight Hollow area on New Years' day.

I agree with hookin. That is probably the last place I'd try to get a machine on the ice. Best places are boat ramp, And rabbits gulch as long as the ice Allows it. Thanks for the heads up.
He got stuck on his way out almost at the top. When we left looked like he high centered on a hump throwing dirt all over.
That's what the open patch of dirt/rock is! I wondered. Everything was snow covered except for that one spot just below a small ridge/change in slope. ha ha

That hill is rather steep. Some people might, but not a chance I would try my 4 wheelers on it.

Hi all, I'm new to the site. Fish Starvy once or twice a week most of the year. At my age also have a very difficult time getting back up the hill in winter. Sled is really heavy with too much gear. Been thinking pulling truck up to gate and using a winch to pull the sled up. Think it would work?

Was at bridge 1/1 with lots of others. Trout were 15 to 20' and hit most anything ... really nice fish. Perch were harder to find but were fairly abundant anywhere deeper than 47'. We wasted too much time in shallower water and finally moved out. Got 11 fatttt perch. Saw several tents that limited out. Really good to see how large they are.

Went to Rabitt Gulch 12/29. Wanted perch, but couldn't find not one! Just the bows that we didn't want. Most did well on bows. Ice was 6" even over deeper water near back end.

Looking forward to sharing info with all ...

Welcome to the site and thanks for posting your report. Do you think the ice is good at Rabbit Gulch, out to the main channel? How deep was the water you were fishing in when you were there on 12/29?

 wiperhunter2,

Didn't think the ice was thick enough out at the mouth of the gulch on the 27th, so we (and others) stayed back about half way back. There was fog or condensation in the air out at the mouth which was basis for our reluctance to go there.

Fished in 32'. Trout were cruising about 15 to 20 same as at the bridge a couple days later. Since perch at the bridge were in 50 FOW I'm guessing now that we weren't deep enough. Could be that the perch are coming in, but still in deeper water. Last year in the Gulch they were in 22' over the weeds. We went back to the weeds and drilled several holes from 17 to 8', but no perch there either.

One guy ventured a guess that they just haven't come in yet, but we searched for them all summer on the boat (in Rabitt Gulch) and couldn't find them then either. Wondering if the large school in there last winter moved out to deeper water. Saw lots of perch schools below the bridge along the wall last summer and also over in Saltarus (sp?). Hoping that anglers let all those small eyes go so there will be some bigger ones for us this winter. Good fishin'.
