First trip on the ice this year. Fishin South side of Cemetery point for Perch. Got a what I thought was a better Perch bite, then I thought I had hooked the bottom somehow. But it started moving and taking line, bent the ice pole over double. Then I could see it had gone around my second pole line, and was pulling the pole in.
Got it to the 4 inch diameter hole with its mouth looking bigger than the hole. One shake of the head after he saw me and the ice fly busted off the light leader.
Thankfully I still had my gear and only lost the ice fly.
Ice is 6 inch plus thick, and the Perch are small that I caught. Still nice to get out on the ice, and have one good pull from a big fish!

4"?! What kind of auger had you got?
Exciting times indeed! I've heard tell stories of perch that "gained a lot of weight". My first Musky was such - not under ice, but - still think I never hooked him, he was just too danged stubborn to let go of my catch!
Glad ya didn't lose gear, hope you landed a few stripy friends too!

I've been using a 4 inch Nils the last few years. Big enough for most fish, and really goes through the ice fast.

I had a similar experience there about 5 yrs ago. I hooked a perch and was bringing it in then my drag went nuts. Almost spooled me & when I put the pressure on it was all over. My brother had a similar experience there too. My worst thing was when one grabbed the camera on my Fish TV. Almost took it all & did wreck the camera. I think its teeth cut through the shielding on the cable & let water in.

Wow! Sounds like a lot of damage. I've ice fished Pineview for a many years and this is the first time something like this has happened. I'll be more aware of the Musky possibly coming after my catch.

Long time ago when I lived in Richfield & fished Yuba a lot I'd hook a perch and leave it down there for a while to kick up some ruckus. That seemed to bring in a lot of fish. Kinda think all that would do now would be to attract a northern. Same thing with the tigers at Pineview.

I bet you get a bigger diameter auger after missing a catch like that one!

Yes, I actually have a 6 inch auger that I may start using when I fish Pineview.
Thanks for the reply.
