ice fishing Birch Creek?
#1
I've never been to birch creek and I've heard people talk about ice fishing it. When I look on the map it says the road is closed in the winter time. Does that mean I can make it in my 4x4 truck or does that mean there is a gate and you have to take snowmobiles? Any information on ice fishing this lake in general would be appreciated. Thanks

HWY 39 is is closed and only snowmobiles can make it past. You can access it from the back way through Evanston, it doubles the distance, for me at least. Once you get to the turn off it is about a half mile to the backside of the dam. I would think 4X4 would be required to get there. The trek up the backside of the dam isn't that bad, but I have never done it pulling my gear in a sled. Hope that helps.

The Monte Cristo road is closed for the winter. You would have to come through Evanston Wyoming (freeway) or through Logan/Bear Lake.

Birch Creek is in my back yard. Usually, I hate fishing it. I have had some good days, but very few. That doesn't mean you can't catch fish, but it is just harder than other lakes I have fished.

I went out about a week ago. We fished for about 6-7 hours. I had 1 or 2 bites all day. My wife and 3 sons didn't catch anything either.

You can park at the bottom of the resevoir and hike in. It takes about 20 minutes...

Awesome thanks for the info guys I'm going to try it. So it looks like I would go to Evanston go North on 89 which turns into highway 16 on the Utah side then head west on monte cristo 39? Is this correct? Is the lake noticeable from the road or am I going to need GPS?

Through Evanston, back into Utah, make a left in Woodruff towards Monte, there is a small sign for Birch Creek approx. 5 miles from Woodruff, keep an eye out.

No GPS needed, Josh.

The small brown sign on the side of the road says "Public Fishing/Camping 1 mile".

Follow that.

The hike up the dam probably sucks in the snow with a sled, but hopefully it's worth it once you're there.

check your pm's

There is a sign, but might want to mark it just in case. It is a small sign and in the winter might get covered in snow/slush from the plows. I missed it my first time there, and ended up finding Woodruff instead. I am not sure about making it to Woodruff as it is a long dirt road and I have never seen it in the winter, but that might be a good place to hit if BC is not fishing well. It was pretty drawn down this summer, but me and the FIL caught a bunch towards the inlets. Nice fat cutts up to 20".

It's cold up there. The folks in Woodruff go to Evanston to get a break from the cold. I've never been there when it wasn't windy. Dress like you're going to the artic, then add an extra layer.

Its about 8 miles up the highway, from Woodruff. When you get to the 2nd Cattle guard in the highway, you will see the sign and turn right.(don't cross the 2nd guard,, the turn is right at the guard
Then its a mile to the dam. It always gets colder than the report says!
If you pull a ice sled, take the most southern trail up the dam, because there is snow going down to the pond on the other side. Its just shell rocks, going down on the north end.
