Is a steelhead just a sub species of rainbow trout? I've always wondered what the difference is. I tried to Google it but that was no help.

as far as i understand a steel head is just a rainbow trout that spends it life in the ocean. According to the Idaho regs on many of the rivers that contain both steel head, and "rainbow trout" if it is bigger than 20" it is a steel head.

It depends on how elitist you are. Steelhead are rainbows that migrate to the ocean and return to freshwater to spawn then go back to the ocean. They have taken eggs from steelhead on the west coast and planted them in the Great Lakes where they've done very well. But even though they are the exact same genes as steelhead, some west coast fishermen say that Great Lakes steelhead are only lake run rainbows because they don't ever live in saltwater.

Here's a Lake Erie Steelhead I caught fly fishing in 2011. Highly recommend the trip and guide. [#BF0000]Note: Don't check the "Inline" box unless you intend to include the picture inside of your post.[/#BF0000] [signature]
