Mother Ship Will Probe Lower Everglades with Angling Icon Stu Apte
#1
Angling icon and world-record fly-rodder Stu Apte is putting together, with Blue Moon Expeditions, what may be one of the more unique tarpon trips you'll find in U.S. waters. It's fishing Florida's Whitewater Bay and the Shark River area of the Everglades aboard a double-decker mother ship in comfort without making long runs in flats boats that are usually a part of fishing here.

La Casa Marquesas (see the attached photos) will be on the fishing scene starting Sunday, February 17 and remain in the back country for the next six days.

Here's the scoop from the man himself:

"I will be on board the whole time on both of these trips, and I will probably do some seminars if the people on board make the request. It is not general knowledge that a tremendous mass of big, I repeat big tarpon move into certain little areas of some of the bays in Whitewater Bay during the month of February. I have done a number of TV shows in that area. The majority of these fish weigh more than 100 pounds and they are basically in there to eat. I personally do more plug casting for them then I do fly fishing but I do quite a bit of fly fishing also. Since the Flamingo Motel was blown away and never replaced, the nearest place to stay is Homestead, so this Floating Luxury Lodge allows for a quick and easy access to the fishery. Probably no more than a 15 minute run by boat, which would allow you to come in for a fantastic lunch each day."

Apte says there are two basic trips: a 2 night/3day all- inclusive fishing expedition for $1300 per person or 3 nights/4 days all inclusive for $1800 per person.

Both of these packages include: Round-trip transfers to and from Marathon in the Keys: Comfortable accommodations aboard the La Casa Marquesas: Three days of guided fishing: 849-8254 Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner each full day onboard.

This is a floating luxury lodge that eliminates the long, uncomfortable boat rides to and from the prime fishing grounds. The trips can only handle six anglers and their three guides on each trip.

Starting March 25, the La Casa Marquesas will be stationed in the Lower Florida Keys/Marquesas area in time for the fantastic run of big tarpon and permit right during the big push of water created by the full moon. And yes, Apte will be back on board, this time with a film crew doing a TV shoot, but he says there's room for some additional anglers.
