I have been wanting to get a small boat for fishing and waterfowl hunting. A friend of a friend is selling a Alumacraft 12ft flat bottom on a trailer with a 5hp briggs and stratton motor on it. Anybody have an experience with a similiar boat/motor. He is asking 1,000 for the package but the prop on the motor needs replaced. The boat has been used very little and seems to have been very well maintained. Is his asking price high/low? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

For me motor is everything. You can have a boat that looks like a piece and leaks, but if you have a good reliable motor that will get you out of any situation that what's important. I bought a 12.5 ft valco with 15 horse Johnson, with trailer, from the mid 80's for $600. My research valued at 1200-1500. My dads first boat motor was a B&G 7.5 horse and it worked like a charm. Only caution is wind and waves, smaller motors don't get you off dangerous waters very quickly. They ususally will not get a boat up on plane. Check to see if it has been ran enough to keep all the seals from going bad. If it is a motor that has sat for a long time they can go bad, but if motor isn't super old you can even purchase seal replacement kits. I bought that for my motor and it came with 15 different seals now she purrrrssssss like a kitten. Just my opinion which isn't worth much but based on the size of the motor I would try to get him to come down a little bit. I bought a 5 horse Johnson with six hours on it for $300 bucks, it was a 1985. I guess for the package I would be comfortable at more like $800 if the motor runs well. Don't know if that you or helps.
Happy fishing and hunting!

You can find a better deal I have that motor and hate it. And you want at least a 14' boat. Curt G.

We bought a 14' Gregor for $300. then a trailer for it for $400. (NEW) The motor we had which was a 5 hp Nissan (which sells for $1,300.)
By the way, the boat was just fine with the 5 hp, just no speed records.
So, basically, I would say, what condition is the boat, is it on it's own trailer and you already mentioned the motor needs work, that can be expensive..we spent $200. having the carb cleaned and rejetted for our Honda.
I would also suggest, if you did go for this, think about adding a nice Electric Motor.

Ive bought and sold a lot of boats in my life. From a 12 sears with a 6hp to a 32 ft Chris Craft off shore fisherman'with ntwin 350"s. Im no expert but I have learned this much you cant pay too much for a good one and you can''t pay too little for a bad one. If the guy is in range and its a good one dont lose sleep over the fact you might have left a few dollars on the table. Heck you cant take it with you anyway.'Fiddling with a boat and motor on the boat ramp is no fun.

Are you sure you want a flat-bottomed boat. With Idaho waters, I would sure want a deep-V instead. I, also, would consider a 14, but Valcos and Gregors, for instance, have 12's that can withstand some pretty rough weather. Depends on what kind of water you will be fishing and hunting in, but I wouldn't even think about going out on many of Idaho's waters in a flat-bottomed. Doesn't sound like that good of a deal to me, esp. considering the motor. Mike

Just noticed you are from Boise. There is a 14 Valco with a built-in duck blind for $1500 on Boise Craigslist. One gas and one electric...he might consider 1000. Mike

I'm originally from Boise.. Living eastern Idaho going to school and working now. But I have family still in boise area that could check it out for me. My biggest concern was the size of the motor. 5hp seemed kinda small for two full grown men, gear, and a dog. I'm in no hurry in sure I can find a good deal on something.

And I agree that there is nothing wrong with a small motor. Awesome benefit is that you can turn that thing down to nothing and it will troll nice and slow, it will sip gas instead of sucking it. But after fishing with a 5 myself, it warrants a little bit more reasonableness in how you fish. Example if you see thunderheads in the distance, or you feel that wind kicking up, you would want to move to where your protected or head off a little sooner than you would with a motor with more h.p...
I went from a new 16 ft.valco wide to a 12.5 gregor and I regret it. My little boat will fit 2 fat boys, sort of. I agree a 14 would probably be just about right.

Aside from the inflatable pontoons, I have never owned a boat smaller than 14'. They would definitely be fair weather boats.
We got caught in some wind in the Gregor. The 5 got us off pretty good. In fact the Minn Kota 45 is fantastic to move around. Not quite as fast as the gas, but not too bad either.
We use to own a 14 foot Alumicraft. It was very narrow, and maybe three big boys. Gregor is nice and wide. Good boats, but I would want a 12'er.

The little 12.5 I have right now is a lot of fun. It has a 15 horse Johnson on it. One day I was by myself and I thought, "You know this boat should get up on plane with just me in it." So I leaned into the middle of the boat and I heard the motor start to pick up. It took about thirty seconds but it finally got up on top of the water. I was just flying in that little boat. I looked down at my fishfinder and it said I was going 28 knots, that like what 30 something miles per hour. It's a pretty neat feeling with hardly anything below you. I was telling a buddy about it and he said better be careful, you hit one wave and your boat is going to go one way and you are going to go another! Oh well, I still indulge from time to time. What's better than a fisherman in a boat with bugs in his teeth? ![[Image: happy.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/happy.gif) NOTHIN

Nice! We had a 25 HP on our Alumicraft, that thing flew. The Gregor we traded a new Nissan 5 for an older slightly used Honda 9.9. Thing about the Honda, to keep from having to make a 9.9 and a 15 then just added a screw. So basically, we remove the screw and it too is a 15hp. This is the older models however.

I have a 16' flat bottom with a 15hp Johnson prop on it, I like my flat bottom because I can get away with less motor and still get my sled to move. The down side is that flat bottoms do ride rough and aren't quite as stable as a deep or modified vee. With two guys and gear I can run just over 20mph and be on plane. With just me in the boat and minimal gear it really scoots. I do augment with an electric trolling motor and use my outboard just to change holes with. I think I am in to the whole thing less than $1,600. All this I guess to say, if you want to fish more than just yourself out of the boat, spend a little more and buy a bigger boat if you can.

OK, you all have valid points, but here it is in a nut shell,
he is wanting too duck hunt, that there says he doesn't need a prop and doesn't a deep-v
he wants it too double as a fishing boat as well
this is what it sounds like he needs, 12'-14' flat or semi-V, with either a mud motor or a jet outboard, alot of the duck hunting is going too be on the river which for the most part can only be run safely with a jet or mud motor.... as stated, you want too spend your money on the motor, you could get a boat/trailer flat bottom for probably 300 bucks if you watch craigslist...
this is what he should look for in my opinion,
http://boise.craigslist.org/boa/3557418953.html
something like this just slightly smaller...
you may want too consider holding off until you get say 4,000 too spend, just my opinion, do right the first time, me it took 3 times too get it right and its still not quite what I wanted as far as motor age.... but you have too weigh your pro's and con's on what you would use it for, that would make it alot easier in selecting a boat/motor combination, everyone is giving there opinions on what they have or would like as far as what they use it for, make a list and see what your going too use it most for, have any questions feel free too PM me,
Matt
