This is the first fly fishing invention to be tested on Kickstarter.com, the crowd funding website. http://kck.st/WzBMs0
What are your thoughts? Impressions?

Definitely an interesting concept. Since a fly fishing reel doesn't play much of a role other than storing line, I suppose there's no reason it has to be attached to the rod, as long as the line flows out freely when you pull. If I were into fly fishing, I'd give this invention a look.

This is an interesting concept. I often say I only have so many casts in shoulder when I'm using my eight weight.
I'm going to try Tenkara for creek fishing this summer.
Good Luck

Ill be honest........not something I would ever buy or think of buying. First thought that came to mind is the cluster F you would have trying to put the reel on the rod to put a big fish on the reel to utilize the drag. The benefit would be for your big rods like WD said his 8wt drains him. Well when I am chucking my 7wt or something big that this would help with It is also cause I am going after big fish that I am going to need to put on the reel to keep them from breaking me off. Not much of a benefit for lighter 2 and 3 wts since the reels on those don't weigh much anyhow.
Good to see some one trying out new ideas though.

I LOVE that idea. It makes a lot of sense to me for most applications. By biggest reservation was getting the reel back on the rod with ease - but some of the youtube videos showed just how easy it was. I have my doubts he'll meet his goal and get funded, but I think I'm going to share his story on my blog to help it along. Thanks for sharing!

Why does the reel need to be on the rod? Even if you kept the reel in the chest holder and used the drag while fighting the fish, the line would go out of the reel and into the first guide on the rod, which is usually some distance in front of you.

How you going to palm your arbor ? Tightening/ loosening drag transitions from feeling would be highly awkward and not something I would want to be doing while trying to land a big fish.

Take a fly rod, add the line from a reel, then lay the reel on the ground.
Even with the LIGHTEST of rods, that thing is going to be so tip heavy.
Windriver, I think your arm would get more tired from this.
try this:

Designing a FLY ROD is built around the weight of the line and the reel. A pendulum effect.
I agree with the no palming, let alone as I mentioned before, no chest packs, no slings, and he loves this come back, breasts[ ] and forget crawling up on spooky fish.
Night, you got to feel better here on the Idaho board after the responses on the Utah board.
Sounds like some are interested here. Good luck!

Stacy,
You are absolutely right. Balance was more an issue 20 years ago when fly rods were a lot heavier. This past summer I was able to meet with the rod designers from Sage, Orvis, and TFO and I asked them whether they take into account the weights of reels when designing their latest generation fly rods. Their answer was a unanimous 'No'. They design their rods to be as light as possible and let the reel manufacturers try to catch up. Hence you now have reels made of titantium!
Everyone who has taken my challenge of taking off the reel and putting it in their pocket and casting for 10 minutes has been amazed. In fact on another forum, a competition distance caster tells me they require that the reel be attached to the rod in distance casting competitions because otherwise everyone would take it off to get more distance!
In regards to questions about big fish and re-attaching the reel, I have tested this on big steelhead, redfish, bass and black drum. You are actually better off with the Rexfly. Have you ever had a big fish take our all of your slack line only to have the line whip up and wrap around your reel or even hook keeper? This is such a problem that TFO has taken the hook keeper off their top saltwater rods.
By letting the fish take its first fun with the reel on your chest, you virtually eliminate line tangles. Its simple to palm the reel with it on your chest, then you can quickly and easily re-attach your reel. Its a piece of cake. Also remember that it is the slack line hanging from your reel as you cast that gets flung all over getting tangled around your vest, forceps, boat cleats, etc. With the reel on your chest, the line just hangs down and doesn't move.
Finally, check out this news segment from yesterday. Rexfly will also be shown on this Saturday's KSL Outdoors with Adam Eakle if you happen to get that station in your area.

To be honest I have never had the issue of them get tangled up like that. Either Ive only caught small fish I guess or I practice good line management. Still stand by my orig. assesment that it is one more thing to try and screw around with while fishing. If you are getting that tired from throwing flys in my opinion you have a couple of options. Take the time to sit down and enjoy the scenery occasionally, there is more to getting out fishing that stabbing fish. Maybe spend a little more time off the water keeping yourself healthy. Just my 2 pennies.
