Does anyone know if the Brown Trout are spawning yet on the Provo? I haven't fished the spawn for a few years, and I think they don't spawn until the end of November, but I can't remember for sure. Does anyone have any info on this? I'm thinking of getting out the fly rod one last time this year, but I'd like to hit the spawn right in the middle if possible. Thanks.

they spawn over several months so its kind of hard to hit the middle of it. you should have some on beds right now im sure of it.

Thanks xman I think I'll be hitting it towards the end of the month. I'll be using woolly buggers, maybe I'll tie up some egg-sucking leeches too. What does eveyone have success on when the browns are spawning?

Hi Xman i have been helping a flyfishing class that has been going to the provo. They had success on olive and black wooly buggers, sow bugs, and olive scuds, but i would try some globug patterns as well. Good luck[ ]

Welcome Articgirl!
How often does HFT have flyfishing classes?
Is your website up yet?
And last of all what kind of rod blanks do you have available?

I will fish a yellow or peach colored glo-bug with standard nymphs dropped off of it, e.g., hare's ear, sow bug, midge, or any variation of a pheasant tail. The nymphs in the river at this time of year are typically small, so I woulnd't fish any nymph larger than a 18 at this point.
Also try a Pistol Pete or "buzzer" as they are called at Sportsmans. It is a standard woolley bugger with a propeller on the front. Slam the banks with that thing and see what happens! Casting directly accross the current or a slight down and across presentation works best with those flies. The more drag you can induce, the better. If you do use a propeller fly, make sure you tie on a swivel 10-12" inches above it. Otherwise, you can get a nasty twist in the tippit and loose fish.
Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone for the tips, and welcome articgirl to the forum! You guys also answered another question I had that I didn't even ask. I have glow bugs too that I have tied. I was going to ask if they also hit the standard nymphs during the spawn too, but I guess they do. I've only fished the spawn once, and it was about 6 years ago. I caught quite a few, all with a black leach with no wait, casting it across and slightly down current. Thanks again and good luck to anyone else who goes out.

the reality of spawn fishing is kind of separated into three sections. pre spawn spawn and post spawn. if your fishing browns during the "spawn" then they are quite difficult to catch. and for the sake of the fish hard on them too while they are spawning. now for the prespawn it is excellent fishing since they stage up in large holes above or below there spawn runs. they feed aggresively before the spawn since they dont feed much during that period. the post spawn is tricky. since right after they spawn the fish are in limbo and trying to recuperate. so you have about a week of post spawn fishing where it is unbelievable aggresive strikes. after that they generally move into there winter quaters and feed as they do during cold months. winter quarters are small and few between on the provo, a theory of mine but i wont get into it, hence the white fungus on the fish. as for fishing the browns on the beds, streamers or anythign fairly large work well. you have to bring it across or infront of their bed and they will chase it off nipping at it. this is a great time to catch or hook the biggest fish in that stretch of river. but they dont really strike. you have probably missed the prespawn on the river. so you should be able to get some inbetween feedings during their spawn. look for deep holes above and below long runs and riffles that have beds in them. fish the deep holes right on bottom, thats where the big brownies go when they are not on their beds.
