Lake Powell
#1
Hit Powell last week, just now getting to post. Caught lots of nice smallies, and lots of small largemouth (indicator of what is to come?). Fished mostly the Good Hope Bay area using grubs and crankbaits. I would cast through an area using a Yozuri Crank-n-dive(shad color), catching active fish. Then go back through the same structure with a white Yamamoto grub on a 3/8 oz. jighead to pick up the stragglers. We seemed to just find pockets of fish where we would hook up, probably fish cruising for shad. Seen only one small boil which ended up being black bass chasing shad in the back of a small cove. My partner and I caught 6 fish out of that one hole, including a 3lb largemouth. Water temps were 60-62 F and the wind played with us, but it turned out to be a successful day. Smallies probably averaged 9-11 inches last fall. This year we were catching 12-14 inch fish weighing in at about 1.5 lbs. What a fight!
