Brown Trout
#1
Anyone know when the browns spawn? Is it the same in most utah streams/rivers? I always thought it was in the fall.
I kept a couple from my trip yesterday and today at Diamond Fork and when I cleaned them I noticed they had eggs. 1 fish they had barely started forming in and 2 they looked as big as I've seen in any other fish before.
If they are preparing for a spawn I'd like to know so I can catch and release, avoid their egg beds, etc. to help keep as many as possible alive.
Any input would be much appreciated.

Fall spawn. On Diamond Fork and tribs peak is the first week of November typically. Cutts should be spawning in the next month or so there. The Bows in there are sterile.

Well I thought so. Why do those fish have eggs already? Do they take that long to form before they drop them in the river bed?

Sometimes when food or other resources stress the fish in an environment females will develop eggs. They are usually sterile and may be used as a source of food in times of need. I am paraphrasing what a professor (Probably badly) at USU told me when I inquired about a skinny cut I caught with eggs in the fall during the deer hunt below Panguitch damn.

*Disclaimer* I may be wrong, the conversation was 3 years ago and my memory is shakey.
