Towing
#1
Do you guys tow with a full tank of gas in your boat? Doing the math for a 30 gallon tank that's only an extra 200 lbs or so, which is like adding 1 more person. We're thinking of filling up gas here and driving down to Powell. What do you think? Will I drop from the 12 mpg I was getting?

You would more than make up for any mileage loss in 30 gallons of much cheaper local fuel.

A lot of people not only tow with a full tank, but they also throw in a few 5 gallon cans full of gas if they have somewhere to keep them while they are down there. The savings is well worth it if you can do it. The gas mileage difference on your tow vehicle is very minimal unless the payload is nearing your capacity.

I always fill up locally because not only is the fuel cheaper, but I can get fuel that does not have ethanol in it. If possible, while down at Powell, I try and fuel off the water, but that is not always possible. I don't ever buy premix there. I don't trust their choice of oil, their ability to mix properly, and it tends to have more water in it than the regular fuels. Up here, I rarely run a tank out on a trip, but try and keep the tank full to minimze the condensation of water in the tank !! I use regular Marine Sta-bil when using non-ethanol fuel, if I have to use ethanol fuel, I use that new enzyme treatment that is out for ethanol fuels. You can get it at Wal Mart !!

I agree but also add the wear on your fuel pump can me substantial(depending on you make and model) if you let it get below a half tank and even worse at less than a quarter tank.

Always keep boats as full as possible. This helps keep water out of the fuel system. The fuel consumption during transport wont be noticeable.

keep the tow rig at 68or less dosent matter what type of motor you have or the make,,nasty powerstroke or a 5.4 triton its 68 or less is going to give you the best gas milge. 4 ur buck trust me boys 25 years doing cars ive learned a few things...slow down!!!

Yup, that's the Farr West Cardlock, Sinclair, pumps only (not like a regular mini-mart station). 885 N 2000 W, near exit #346.

I use gasbuddy.com a lot to find the least expensive gas. It doesn't have a search limiter for non-ethanol, but you can do lots of other valuable searches. You do not have to join the site to search or get info, just to report fuel prices.

Just the other day I noticed a ethanol-free gas sign right off the freeway in Bountiful/woodscross. 2600s exit, go west, right there at the T. Its not a typical gas station, but a fuel company.
