Today was another day that will go down in steelhead fishing history for me. My good friend Ductedtaped4runner and his fiance are in town and Ductedtaped still has not landed a steelhead and has been at it for years with only a few hookups.( his fiance can't say the same. [
] ) With my Wife (whom has never even hooked a steelhead.), Son, Daughter(also never fought a steelhead.), Ductedtaped and his fiance in tow we decided to head to the river a little late. made it to the hole around 1pm. My daughter was excited especially after the fish her brother landed two weeks ago. she is only four years old and has a hard time casting and fishing steelhead gear so "she decided" that i would basically do all the work while she reaps the benefits fights the fish. I hooked three fish in the first thirty minutes. all came off before my daughter could make it down the rocks to where she could fight the fish. Ducttaped's fiance hooked and lost one during this time also.
another 20 minutes passed before i hooked another fish. this time my daughter was standing right next to me and i handed her the rod and got it tucked up under her arm before i ever felt how big the fish was. it took about 2 seconds after i handed her the rod to realize i needed to put a hand on the rod and one on her. Sometimes my 9ft medium action gl2 can get worked over pretty good by these b-run fish so i was instantly worried we were going to lose this fish and i did not want to see my daughters heart break. the fish made a roll down bellow us and we knew instantly it was a massive male. the fight lasted about 15 minutes the fish would hold heavy about ten feet off the bank then would make nasty 30 yard runs down stream. I'm so happy i started my kids fishing at such young ages. just like my son my daughter listened to every word i said to her and did what she had to do to land this fish. ducttaped4runner made an awesome net and soon we were staring at the biggest steelhead that has ever fallen victim to the end of one of my lines. taped out at 38 inches, double striped and to top it all off it was a hatchery fish. the moment that we put the tape to the fish and seen the length i knew my daughter had just landed the first wall hanger in our family and immediately called my taxidermist to let him know i would be stopping by. The
on my daughters face and her jumping up and down screaming YES! over and over again will live with me forever and now she will be able to look up at our wall everyday and remember that fish.
While i was notching my tag for my daughters fish my wife hooked her first steelhead ever but it came off after a short fight. ( a little panic set in i think and she started doing all sorts of crazy stuff with the lamiglass.) I'm glad she at least ended up hooking one now she is motivated to keep trying. steelhead fishing has been pretty rough on her in the past and she refuses to take a handoff from a fish i hook. Which makes me very proud of her.
we ended up not finishing out the day on the river and went to the woodlot for an amazing hamburger. we will be back out trying again tomorrow ill keep you guys posted. check out the picture of maddi's beast bellow and sorry for the long read.
