Spring Fling at Powell
#1
Took my yearly spring trip with my friend Dave, new friend Sean, and Dave's two boys, Mike and Matt. We missed Dan this year due to some medical problems.

Arrived at Bullfrog on Wednesday Afternoon. Very nice lady at the check in got us started off with our tags and mussel certificates. Got a bunch of gas from Sean due to the fact that I now qualify as a " senior citizen" and could get a yearly pass for $10.00 bucks.

After getting settled into the 'boattel' we took off to 7 Mile for the afternoon. Air temp was chilly, mid 40's, water was in the low 50's.

Started off slow, worked several spots on the right arm of 7 Mile with little success, then moved to the Right arm. Things began picking up there, connected on some SMB and a Walleye ( Dinner !!). Hit a few other spots, then headed home.

Thursday morning, we headed out again, starting in 7 Mile. We pretty much stayed in the 7 Mile, Cedar, Forgotten area all week. We have a couple of no name spots that we fish, one we call Dan's Canyon. Thursday was pretty consistent, lots of SMB, a few LMB, and another walleye. Sean had the hot bait, a Gulp Smelt, 3". We were drop shotting our baits, working them from up shallow to about 20 ft. The consistent thing was the structure, we had to have "HUGE" rock slabs in the water. No slabs, few fish.

Thursday and Friday were fantastic, lots of SMB in the 1 1/2 lb to 21/2 lb range with a few 3+ thrown in. There were also some 3-4lb LMB in the mix. We only caught 1 striper all week. We took 1/2 doz. Walleye in the same locations we were fishing for bass.

Wind blew like a banshee on Saturday. Sean and I came in when it started blowing about 1PM, while Dave and his boys stayed out several hours longer. We were still catching fish, same pattern, all week.

Great trip !!

Nice trip! make me jealous!

Been following Wayen's site like every year, seems like the LMB might not do great this year due to the water levels being out of the brush, what did it look like when you were down there?

[#0000FF]Nice report Matt. Glad you got to follow your own prescription for a brainbroom. Also glad you found enough action to keep you smiling. Tugs is good. Smiles is good.

Water is down 10-15 feet below what it is normally this time of year. Much of the structure we were fishing were boulder fields, below slick rock that you would normally pass by. After establishing our pattern on Wednesday, all we did was cruise by a wall and if there were boulder fields, we would stop and fish.

I would like to go back down and work some of the same area's for walleye. I had some crawlers with me, but forgot my weight forward spinners. There were also some interesting things on the graph in 30 - 40 ft of water in several canyons, Cedar and Forgotten, that we tried to check out, but did not take the time to rig up with a spoon. Kind of hard to work a drop shot at that depth with a 1/4 oz of lead. My guess was that we were seeing bait balls with schools of stripers sitting on the bottom under them. Did not have and chovy's to chum with to get em started though.
