Sunny day at Yuba
#1
Beautiful weather and lots of fun....
[inline "DSC03663 - 400.jpg"]

Me, my wife and son caught 22 between us.
[inline "DSC03659 - 400.jpg"]

Most caught in weedy areas. Some where caught by sight casting. My son caught all 8 of his Northerns on his fly pole useing flies he tied.

We caught the others on big rapalas.

Great day on the water....

Wow, that's a nice days catch. Looks like you really got into them. I'm pretty sure I seen you out on the water yesterday. I was amazed when I saw your stringer bobbing in the water next to your boat, it gave me hope I would be able to get rid of my skunk. No matter what I threw I wasn't able to get a bump. But that's the way it goes sometimes.

Hi Trevor,
The biggest was just under 8 pounds. There where 5 or 6 guys fishing from the shore with fly poles and spinners that where catching quite a few pike.

Where you on the shore or in a boat?? I have a red and white Smoker Craft boat...no stringer on the side of my boat. A couple of the smaller ones went in the cooler the rest where turned back for you to catch!!
Sorry you got skunked..
I did see a boat with a makeshift canopy with 3 people on board that had a stringer of fish hanging on the side. Quite a few boats after the Northerns Saturday.
Good Luck next time...

I was out on a boat a lil 14' Jon Boat My buddy was in a aluminum 17' bass boat with a canopy. Mistaken Identity I guess. I was thinking it was you that my buddy talked to about filleting the pike. After cutting open the stomach on his pike I think my bait was just not big enough, the lil 22" had a 8" carp in it.

Do you put steel leader on your fly rod? One thing I am curious about. I got a new 8 wt rod I want to try out on pike.

My son was using 40# fluro carbon for leader on his fly pole. I think probably a foot of that instead of the steel leaders we were useing with our spinning reels.

I do not think they rent little fishing boats anywhere on the lake but they do rent waterski boats and jet skis at Oasis campground at Yuba. You could call Utah Parks and Rec and ask them for sure.

Steel leader material is a lot cheaper than Fluorocarbon. Next question should be, are they shallow enough for a floating line?

All I need is for them to be in 2-4 feet of water then woohoo, game on.[Smile] especially if I have steel leader on, it will make a nice weight.

Woohoo... for you because many were caught in that depth range.

I started the day using 25lb braid, but I would double it. I did lose two fish that cut the line. I then put a steel leader on my fly line and I couldn't even tell it was there. Easy to use/cast/fling/strip/whatever. I used a floating line with no problems. Most of my flies are fairly weighted, so it was fine. There is so much crap just below the surface that your snag-rate would probably sky rocket with a sinking line.

Thanks that answers my question. I wondered how it would fare. I plan on doing a little dry casting in my yard to get the feel of it before I try it out. I want to head down there on monday or tuesday next week. [cool]

I would think this would be a major problem with heavy flies and floating line then. There is a sinking line called a WET CELL just for this type of water. Much like Mantua and Henry's I am assuming. Wet Cell forms a belly in the line putting the fly above the weeds. Floating line would be a plus if just jugging straight down like we do with a slip indicator.
