California Fish Report 11-20-03
#1
PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. While most lakes stocking trout in southern California wait until Thanksgiving weekend for their big, big fish stockings, Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lake have already received a huge plants of super-sized trout this week. Anglers can expect rainbows up to 20-0 or more to be caught from both lakes. To land one of these monsters, be sure you are fishing fresh two- or four-pound line and have a reel with a smooth drag. They don't bite much on heavier gear. Santa Ana and Corona manager will plant monster trout again next week for Thanksgiving weekend, perhaps fish as big as 30 pounds. The current California state record is 26.08-pounds, although a fishing license is not required to fish the private lakes, you must have one in your possession to qualify for a state record.

2. Buena Vista Lakes near Bakersfield has been great for trout to 8-0 this past week, but the big news is for catfish anglers. Big catfish start making their appearances from now throughout the winter and big fish will be landed almost weekly. This past week's best cat was a 56-0 landed on shrimp. Look for shrimp, clams, frozen shad, or mackerel to take big fish all winter. While you're there after catfish maybe you should get a two-pole stamp and throw out a floating bait for trout on a second rod and take home a limit of those too.

3. The bloom is off the rose. Diamond Valley Lake, after all the hype of opening day and its tremendous fishery, is practically desserted during the week and certainly not crowded on weekends. Anglers can now drive in on any day and shore fish or launch their own boat, and the bass and trout action is very good. Lead core trollers are using from six to 10 colors of leadcore and Needlefish to get limits of 2-0 to 4-0 class trout along the west dam, while largemouth anglers are having 15 to 50 fish days on plastics in 15 to 40 feet of water with bass to 4-0 common.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

STRIPED BASS: Lake Skinner and Pyramid Lake continue to be very good for stripers. While most are from 1-0 to 4-0 at both lakes, there is surface or near-surface action at both lakes early and late and then a good bait bite in deep water later in the day. Skinner cranked a 21-pounder this week. Castaic has been fair for 8-0 to 17-0 fish on bigger swimbaits and topwater. Havasu on the Colorado River is fair to good for anglers spooning schools of fish in deeper water.

TROUT: Trout fishing is red-hot all across Southern California. Corona, Irvine, and Santa Ana River Lakes lead the way in fish planted. Corona and SARL are seeing plants of fish to 20-0 or better go in this week. Big Bear and Hesperia Lake are also wide open right now on fish to 5-0. Mini-jigs, Turbo Power Bait, Crave Nitro Dough or inflated nightcrawlers will work at any of the lakes right now. Angler's Lake in Hemet is also very good on fish to 6-0 and is having rainbows, steelhead, browns, and California Golden Trout stocked each week. Top spot for big holdover rainbows is Diamond Valley Lake with trolled getting limits of 2-0 to 4-0 class fish.

PANFISH: Not much happening in the panfish world this week outside of the pretty good crappie bite at Lake Henshaw with fish to 1-0. Still some malingering bluegill and redear bites at Lake Perris and Lopez Lake on the Central Coast.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Diamond Valley continues to be a bass hot spot with little fishing pressure, but there are good bites throughout the region at Perris, San Vicente, and Casitas (one live shad). Cachuma, Piru, Pyramid, Success, Kaweah, and Isabella all have pretty fair bites. The action everyplace is mostly in 20 to 50 feet of water on live bait and plastics, but still some surface stuff as fish come up to chase shad.

CATFISH: San Vicente's reopener was good with blues to nearly 60 pounds. The Buena Vista Lakes near Taft have also started to turn on for bigger fish with a 56-pounder this week. While neither of these lakes have wide open bites this time of year, there is always a chance for a real quality fish. Skinner, Hesperia, Irvine, Corona Lake, and Santa Ana River Lakes continue to kick out lots of pan-sized catfish with a few bigger fish pushing 12-0.

OCEAN FISHING REPORT

By Phil Friedman, 976-TUNA

For Outdoor News Service

BITE UPDATES

ALBACORE, BLUEFIN STILL IN PICTURE: While the local offshore fleet faced difficult weather conditions much of the past week, there is still excellent numbers of albacore and bluefin within 1 1/2-day range of San Diego and other Southern California landings. Seas have shifted to flat calm and at least four boats are going on albacore-bluefin runs this weekend -- the Legend out of Seaforth Sportfishing, the Pacific Queen out of Fisherman's Landing, the El Dorado out of Long Beach Sportfishing, and the Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing. The most recent trip run by these boats was trip the Legend ran that managed to get 20 albacore and two bluefin, in spite of horrible conditions. The longfins have been in the 25 to 35-pound range with some to 40, while the bluefin seem to all be in the 40-pound class. This has been a solid bite and if you'd rather have tuna than turkey for Thanksgiving, now is the time to go.

ROCKFISH SEASON CLOSES: An emergency closure of the rockfish, sculpin, and whitefish season will take place this Friday, which leaves local sportboats from San Diego to Ventura scrambling to find other action. Most will switch to halibut and sand bass, which have been mediocre, at best.

SAN CLEMENTE CALICO: The action at San Clemente Island has been a pretty good mixed bag event with a few yellowtail, a few barracuda, and a lot of quality calico bass. With good weather and tides predicted for this weekend, this is a hot ticket.

CATALINA YELLOWTAIL: With better weather in the mix, Catalina Island looks like it should have a very good weekend. The yellowtail bite has been good the past couple of weeks, with a slackening in recent days due to weather and poor tides. That is changing and most skippers think this will be a good weekend at Catalina. In addition to the yellowtail, there has been a few barracuda and white seabass around the island, and the calico bass bite has been very consistent.

YELLOWFIN FADING: The local yellowfin tuna bite under the porpoise has been fading this week with only a handful of the exotics showing in recent days. There are still pockets of warm water with porpoise, but the water is cools and driving these fish south.
