Wiperslayer and I hit the Bay on Fri and Sat and saw a host of other BFT members during those two days. The wiper and walleye catching were off the hook, sure does not seem to me that the channel being opened this year had any effect on the number of eyes we are catching. The biggest difference between last year and this year is the crank bite is awesom this year for both the eyes and wipers but last year bottom bouncing was the hot ticket for the eyes. Although the catching was hot we did not really catch any big fish, eyes up to 19" and wipers up to 20, with the largest number of wipers being right at 15", eyes between 18 & 19". With hot temps the last two day we were glad it was a little over cast on Fri and windy Sat morning but the 3 to 4 ft waves we were in Sat morning were no fun the first thing in the morning.
I think if conditions stay the same this year with another good hatch of Shad these 15" wipers will be beefy 18" plus fish by next year[ ].

Hey that sure sounds fun, I had intended on trying Willard Friday but life got busy so I had to stay close to home. Good job Curt, I appreciate the report. Later J

yeah, yeah - but talk is cheap. Where's the fish porn! Some of us are addicted to that crap!
Just kidding - sounds like it went well, except for the swells. So windy then I take it? Be tempted to try it, but waves that size are a hazard for my little tug. Maybe I can get the big(er) rig rolling by the time the boils come on!
Any favorite colors? Using side-planers, or just washing your lures behind the boat?
Always nice to hear about cooperative fish.

Yea, 2 footers aren't too bad but when they start building to 3 and 4 footers it is a bone jarring experience if you are trying to go fast and even trolling is a fun experience[ ]. I heard a couple of people say they got a little sea sick. We had our best luck using side planners trolling shad raps. Nothing picture worthy imo. Saw that same bunch of guys that are out there every week with their Fly board, flying 10 to 20 ft above the lake on their water propelled boards. I think I posted a pic of them before[:/].
Here is a link to the site, pretty cool, a couple of the video clips are from Willard:

That's awesome. I've never heard of the fly board. I definitely want to give it a try.

They are out there every weekend but $250 sure isn't cheap for an hour demo flight.

Four of us went out again this morning, the wife, our son and a grandson and boated 26 eyes in 4 hrs. not as hot as it was Friday but still not a bad day on the Bay. Do you guys really think one year of snagging eyes in the inlet is going to make a noticeable dent in the population this year? Give it a few years[:/]

Even after a few years I don't see it will make a lot of difference, what really makes the difference is the number of wipers they are putting in the Bay. I don't believe it was by chance that a few years after they stopped stocking wipers, in the numbers they once did, that the eyes took off and we have had several years of good eye catching. Not only have the eyes done good but so have the crappie, bass and gills. For some reason the cats haven't been effected in the same way, it almost seems like the cats do better when the wiper numbers are high. It has been at lot of years since the the crappie and SM bass numbers have been as high as they are right now. Last year there were more LM bass and gills caught then I can remember since they first started stocking wipers in Willard. I'd rather have less wipers, if it means the eye and crappie population stays high but you are right, we will see what happens in a few years.

This time of the year it is always buggy near shore, unless it is windy[ ]. The SM spawn is over but I'm sure you can pick up a few, if you work your magic, there are always a few willing fish near shore if you fish the shore line along the dike. Or you could just follow TD out on his next trip there.

It could be worth your while if the wind isn't blowing too bad.
