I know this is one of those "so what" or "who cares" questions but I thought I ask anyway.
What causes the ice to form little seap holes? I'm sure we've all seen this but I was wondering if it was more then just a crack. I've seen them over 20" and smaller then 2".

I have watch ice form right before my eyes on East Canyon on many of my Thanksgiving trips. It is really interesting. It almost webs together, thin sheets of ice at a time. I think when the ice forms the areas between where it webs is how the seap holes occure

I,m not sure of the term seep hole, but at east canyon there are under water springs that keep the ice from forming in small areas.

From what I have seen, it seems that seep holes are formed a lot of the time from the weight of snow pushing down on the ice...when the ice is forced down, the water below is forced up (usually through cracks). Once the water is forced up, it will either freeze or begin melting the area around the hole. The water being forced up is above the freezing temp., so it will melt the surrounding ice if the air temps are not cold enough. A lot of the time, seep holes are old ice fishing holes...other times they are simply spots that did not freeze solidly when ice first formed...subsequent snow and ice the forces water up through these holes.

Worm and bobber -- you have any personal experience with water being forced up through the holse due to the weight of the ice pushing down on the ice? Like maybe bad slush and a snowmobile? Or maybe your little buddy and his honda getting stuck in the slush, then slipping and falling in the waste deep slush and having to leave after an hour of fishing because he was just a block of ice?
You ready to drill some holes over the Holiday?

PBH, you are such a jerk...you should know by now that Hondas are much better than Polaris. Also, leave my buddy alone...he's just a little slow!
I am definitely ready for some polar angling...do you think your Polaris can handle the trek in? Are you going to invite my little buddy along for the fun? Or, is he gone to the other side of the country to visit the inlaws?

I don't think seep holes are old fishing holes. The only time I see them is within a couple weeks of ice on.
I think they are the lower spots in the ice compared to the water level. So basically you have more pressure under water and then the water gets pushed out and makes the ice even. They always freeze up but only after the water quits flowing as much.

Fish Lake in March and April is covered with seep holes...they are mostly old ice fishing holes that have failed to refreeze...they can be pretty scary if a little bit of snow starts to cover them up. Hitting them in snow machines or four wheelers can be a nightmare.

wormandbobber -- Your calling me a jerk and defending Honda? Is that why you had to push the honda out with your polaris? Is that why your little buddy went out and purchased a polaris after that little experience? You made one heck of a commercial with your polaris that day. Too bad we didn't have a video camera!
Sorry don't mean to turn this into a quad debate. Let's make it fishing related. It was a good day ice fishing even if we had to take some time out to push the honda's accross the lake!
