Rock Creek Hike 'n Fish

I am going to have a rare afternoon and evening to kill late next week, and am thinking about hiking up Rock Creek to do some fishing in the High Uinta Wilderness Area above Stillwater Reservoir. Anyone ever fish the stream in that area that would be willing to give me tips or talk me into/out of it?

Totally agree. Been a few years but, I do remember, skinny water and BIG Browns, also Red Copper Johns[]

Take along some bug spray if you head up. I always caught bigger fish down below even if the scenery and temperature up above is more pleasing. Rock Creek is the one place I really think the Tribal permit is worth getting

I'd throw mostly dries- humpies, caddis, renegades or whatever you have just because it's more fun. Almost everything works this time of year.

When I did guide up there, the Brown PMX and red CJ in #18 worked great, but the skeeters are in full force.

When you state, "down below" do you mean close to where Rock Creek runs into the Duchesne river?

Not right before the Duchesne. Just meant where you weren't hiking above the road and Upper Stillwater reservoir. I especially do well size wise if I stay below that group of ponds in there. Again down on the Indian Reservation is good fishing for bigger trout if you get the permit. There's a bridge that crosses the river in there at about 7000 ft elevation. Anywhere within a half mile of that is productive. If I'm not exact enough I could give you GPS coordinates to my favorite holes [laugh]. But you'll have more fun if you go buy the the fishing permit from the Tribe and go explore on your own. It's really heats up down below as it a fairly open area but hoppers get going well fairly early as well.

I forgot while posting and was reminded in a PM that there is an area of Tribal Land on Rock Creek that requires a guide to fish. Here's the details on the regs on Rock Creek
6. Rock Creek Recreation Area
a. Rock Creek Recreation Area is Day Use Only. Overnight Camping is
STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
b. Permit holders are restricted to a 150 foot recreational buffer, from the middle
of the river to 75 feet on either bank.
c. Special Permit required, from Ute Indian Tribe Outfitting & Guide Services,
for Upper Rock Creek (From Farm Creek Bridge north to the Forest Service
Boundary) – Visit www.uitfwd.com/outfitting for more information.
d. Angling at Rock Creek Recreation area is limited to Flies and Lures ONLY
e. Angling at Rock Creek Recreation area is limited to Catch-and-Release
ONLY.
So stay in the National Forest if you just have the Utah License and stay below Farm Bridge Bridge even if you have a Tribal Permit.
