Question about all types of fish

Hey guys/gals. Got a question about fish ranging from trout, bass, crappie, catfish and such in northern utah (happy valley).
How much mercury is in them? I tried to google but mostly came up with warnings from UL.

Utah Lake has a PCB advisory for the large carp and channel cats. not for mercury.

I thought there would be a list of how much mercury is at each body of water.

The closest you will find to that is the data sheet--last link above. You can get an idea by looking at the Hg levels in the different samples. Some lakes the fish maybe boarderline and in others they might be well over the Hg limit.

Just limit your intake of large browns and bass on those lakes. Usually it is the more piscavorious fish that accumulate the most mercury. Smaller fish along with ones that are more tuned to being insect eaters like rainbows and kokanee don't pick up as much.

Use moderation and you will be okay..

I would bet there's studies and publications, though I don't have references. I know Idaho publishes some public pamphlets on such info.

In a general sense - you can follow the foodchain, being the panfish, smaller varieties, young fish - will have less. As you move up the predator path - the larger fish that eat more other fish will build up more mercury, and other toxins. So big old cats, age old carp, large walleye, fat ass bass - probably have more than say our frisky friendly crappie, gills and perch.

Would also depend on the waters, for sure.

but honestly, I'd still take fresh-caught fish from our agricultural runoff, over farm raised, Chinese import Walmart fishes. For the most part.

Though I'll admit - I do worry about the bundle of Gills I collected at Mantua today. Seems there's been some serious die-off down there. Lots of floating Gills, and seem a number sporting some funky fungus or something - nice big gills half dead, or MORE.

Wonder if someone dropped some Nucular waiste in there!

You probably should try contacting your Dept of Env. Quality and see if any studies have been done. On those same links there is a contact page that also list some of the groups that are doing current research. Try getting a hold of them. Chances are if it is public water some one somewhere has at least checked it. Either universities, DWR, or Env Quality.

Thanks cpierce. I was thinking of that. I have heard of someone at USU doing a study at the water i fish. I was thinking of going up to the university one day and see if i could find some info.

I wouldn't eat much from jordanelle, but other than that you should be fine. I don't fish any of the places mentioned on the advisory list a whole ton except ul and I eat everything there except I don't fish for cats anymore a whole ton. Look up the advisory list on the gov't wildlife page. If it's not on the advisory, you're good to go. There is no mercury problem at utah lake at all, just pcbs in carp n cats. You have to know though, that fish you get at the store is likely to be double, or quadruple the amount of contaminants of the fish that are even on advisory lists. A much higher dose of poison is allowed by the FDA. Otherwise, it might hurt the economy........with much ness......yes it's screwed up.

I would also be concerned about the browns from the Weeb. around Morgan!!!
I have to admit that I haven't paid much attention, and have eaten lots from areas of concern, but I'm in my last years and why not go this way? At least I had fun doing it. [][] I wonder, does mercury affect dogs the same way. I share my meals with Sparky [shocked] I guess, we'll go together since we're about the same age.
