Just got back from five days in Shoshone. Hundred fish days and we spent time hiking and exploring geyser basin everyday. Pocket lake was fantastic as well. The only disapointment was that the browns were not up in the shallows like last time I was there. We only caught mackinaw. They were deep as well. We would drop anchor in sixty feet of water then drop a tube down( brass head). Most times the jig wouldn't get to the bottom. We camp on grizzly beach. I have never seen another boat on that side of the lake.

Best time to catch the browns in the shallows is October. Grizzly Point is a good place to camp for sure. Caught a ton of big ones off that point and in the Bay where Pocket dumps into. Did you fish the narrows at all? If so how was it? Been wanting to hit Shoshone again this year but been too busy at work and having too much fun catching monster Macs in Yellowstone Lake. I usually get into Shoshone 3-4 time a season. Couple times in June and a few time in Oct when the Browns and Macs are spawning.

Haven't been there recently but i'm guessing any flies that look like a type of fly and and lures that look like a type of fish work.

I have always had luck on the Yellowstone Lake casting or trolling Panther Martin spinners. The Cuttys seem to like all black, yellow with silver blade and black with silver blade the best. They're a bit heavier, so cast well if you don't have a boat. jake's are also a fav.

Don't they want you to keep the Macks?

Yes and they will fine you if they catch you putting them back. I usually keep a bunch for the smoker and kill the rest by hitting them over the head and puncturing their air bladder.

Just got back from the Madison right outside Yellowstone. I second the x-caddis. Great fishing right at sunset and well into the night. Big light colored stimulator with an x-caddis behind it were the ticket fished right off the bank.
Caught this beauty on a size 14 x-caddis a foot from the bank. Color doesn't matter cause its nighttime.

So we catch a bunch of lakers every opener but when I go back in July or Aug I can't seem to find them. Where and what are you using ? We keep them all. That water produces the best tasting lakers I've ever had.

I usually fish the S.E. corner of the lake where the Thorofare River dumps into the lake. There are some really nice shelves where the big macs like to hang out and feed on small cuts coming in and out of the river. I usually fish in 60-110' fow of water this time of year to catch them. By Oct its only in about 10-40'.
