Pineview Flotilla 10/17
#1
Tube Dude, Wiperhunter2, a couple other guys whose monikers I did not catch - and I - showed up to brave the chill at Pineview this morning. TD and I were at the Port Ramp while Mars and Regulus still shone brightly in the sky. It was 29°F at launch.

My constitution apparently isn't up for winter yet, and my fingers got numb right away. My first attempt at threading a worm on a hook went awry. I got the worm on but found to my dismay that I couldn't let go. A closer peek showed the hook embedded nicely in my forefinger. "Well if I didn't feel it go in..." said I to me, and yanked.
Didn't feel it come out, either. Felt it later. Sho' nuff.

TD and I bobbed about aimlessly for a few hours, catching the odd flyswatter crappie and cookiecutter perch. TD says he had a ten-pound crappie on until it got one look at him and promptly fled. Hey, If nobody else saw it, you can claim a ten-pounder, right? The gospel according to TubeDude.

The other guys can append their results below. Here's a shot of TD right after he surrendered to the gods of famine.

Thanks for the report! Sorry to hear the catching wasn't better for you guys. That sucks about the hook in the finger, at least you couldn't feel it though haha.

When you guys go out on your floatillas do you usually just target perch and crappie? I always see lots of panfish in the reports and always wondered if you that's just how the fishing went that day or if you guys target them specifically.

[#0000FF]Pooh on Pineview. Getting worse every year for perch and crappies. But glad we could finally meet up and share some water. Sorry about the hook in finger thing. Some guys do anything to lose weight. And Perchinski was the other guy who breezed by on the way up the lake.

I wasn't going to even post a report. But since I got some good pics of you and WH2 (if he has a good side) I figured I would just chime in on your report.

For the benefit of those who crave details, water temp hovered around 51 degrees. It started out with a light breeze but laid down to decent glass. Didn't help the fishing though. I'm playing the moon card...no, not my best side...the full lunar thing in the sky.

We saw a lot more fish (on sonar) than we caught. There were lots of fish in 24 to 26 feet of water right off the ramp. But also quite a few in other depths...like 31, 34, 36 and even 38. But whether it was the moon or whatever they mostly had lockjaw.

Good to see someone's getting out whether the fish are biting or not. I hope to get out in a week. Waiting for a stupid part for the boat still.[mad]

I had a feeling earlier this week you'd be there today based on the weather forecast. I've been stuck working early for the last couple weeks or I'd have tried to join ya all for the fun.

Lockjaw has been the norm for us on all the lakes this season though the trips were limited as well. Did some fair stream fishing, but it's been worse that I can remember on the ponds we tried. Hopefully next year will be better.

Great photos as always, and still would have beat working all day.

Yup, that was me and Triton21 (Chad) wake-ing by you on our way to the Narrows. Got some of those lookalike crappies ourselves, even a token 4" smallie.
Some on worms, most on 2" smoke senkos. Our buddies yanked some HUGE smallies off the same white rocks on that north side about a week ago. Gov't Shutdown must have trickled down to Pineview.

Well we did not do much better, except for the one fish[Wink]. How late did you guys stay Rocky? We did no see you where we last saw you at noon, when we decide we had enough and moved. We moved over to the North side of Cemetery point and did catch one 9" perch, more mud cats and some crappie but the wind came up around 1pm so we left.

"Gov't Shutdown must have trickled down to Pineview."

[#0000FF]First time I've ever seed the gummint blamed for bad fishing. They get "credit" for plenty of stuff though. Most of it deserved.

Now I got a new excuse to add into my reasons for bad fish reports. The moon thing was getting a bit old and tired...like me.

I saw your boat leave the narrows and start working the shoreline so I figured the action wasn't stellar there either.

I "pre-released" about a 9" smallie while we were bottom bouncing jigs out in about 35 feet of water. Shook off about a rod length away from the tube. Just as well. I had no plans for a wall mount.

Water temps have dropped just enough in the last week to send most of the larger bass deeper. I had heard there were some nice smallies being taken on south facing rocky shorelines up until last week. But nothing since the last real cold front moved through.

[#0000ff]I know you would have rather been fishing than working...but you din't miss much. Fish were small and scattered...like last year...only they were a lot less playful.

The area out in the middle of the channel where you, Daniel and I caught all those perch last year is now only about 30 feet deep...but there were still quite a few fish on the bottom...with lockjaw and upraised fins. Last year it was about 45 feet there. But I was using a different sonar this year. That might have been the reason for the difference.

I was strapping my Prangler to my truck just as the first gust came through at 1 pm straight up. About half the trucks were gone by then. By the time I'd driven back past the narrows, there were strings of white lips on the waves.

Back in my personal pontoon days, I would launch at the free swim beach near Port Ramp in the morning and let the breeze drift me down the Narrows. There'd be a calm about 11 and then the wind would swap directions, blowing me effortlessly back to the launch site. Hardly ever touched an oar. Magic - and as predictable as tax increases.

[#502800]We can blame the government? Wow, I was going for the moon card too ....... I missed the floatilla, but I did get down to Otter and caught a few........ Isn't a few just one more than two? I did manage a nice 20" male bow that gave me a real battle.[/#502800]
[#502800]I think we may have been just a little warmer than you guys as we didn't have frost in the morning.[/#502800]

[#0000FF]Glad you at least got to stretch your string and bend your stick. That's a long ride to have to smell skunk all the way back home.

I'm guessing the water level is pretty low there too.

Thinking about maybe one more trip to Starvy...or a trip to Huntington (Mammoth) in the next week or so. Lemme know if you are innermested.

[#502800]If you go to Starvy, shoot me a pm.[/#502800]

You can still launch a boat, but they just pulled the buoys and piled them up in front of the boat dock when we got there.
