Yep, troll...... a rainbow trout or black/gold or a black/silver CD7 Rapala keep switching until one works well. Cast it out as far as you can and then give it 2 or 3 more full pulls of line out. 8 lb test clear line works great for me. Go just fast enough to make the lure wobble nice in the water. Loosen you drag a bit and hang on. You cover alot of water this way. Try shallow and try deep. Your lure should run around 4 to 8 feet down. You should catch plenty of fish like this.
Note, never stop the boat to land the fish, only net if you plan to keep. I like to very carefully reach down to the fish with a pair of needle nose and grab the treble that is in the fish, lift it up and snap a pic and then shake them off. If you have a slotbuster or close and you want to keep one, mark a spot out in your boat so its fast and you are not killing 21 1/2 inch fish all day. Maybe have a 15 inch mark and a 22 inch mark in your boat or on a cooler.
This is my 2 cents but what the hell do I know.
Cheers and good luck.

if you can troll 2 MPH by haws point, in water that is 60 feet deep.
get one line down about 15 feet and the other on top. I have been using Pro-Troll Trout killer or (needle fish) tip with worm and jigs. white or orange last time I was there used 48 worms but got lot more fish than that.

sounds like good advice to me, how would you go about getting your lures deep without any special gear? liketrolling?

I had leaded line out 3 colors. Are you can keep adding sinkers till you get fish.
I have a downrigger and that helps. rainbow was the best color on the needle fish. with a 4 1/2" green dodger. I think a orange squid with two hooks with worm on the hooks. will work. for the squid to work you need to run it with a dodger 18" back. and sinkers need to be 2 feet back of the dodger. don't get to close to the bank. I got more fish out about 70 yards
I will be there Friday If you have a GPS I can send you the coordinates

We plan to fish in the morning when its least windy, and were gunna be fishing mainly the small bays and inlets. Going out on the middle of the reservoir is just not a viable option, im quite aware of the risks.

If it is a stable canoe, I think I would do as you say, stick to bays. Also agree with Old Troller of "wearing" a pfd. Even if a warm day, the water is on the cool side.
Keep your head. You do have a motor to move quick if needed.

I was wondering what happened also, Iwas willing to take him out in my boat so a big wave would not washhim away.

I took my motorized canoe out last sat there. Mine is a pretty ugly one but its a Viking canoe, very heavy. Be safe.
