Bluegill Cut Bait Legal?
#1
New to fishing and new to this forum. I've been fishing the Jordan River lately with worms and hook catfish every once in awhile but I heard cut bait works great for catfish, particularly bluegill. Is this legal in Utah? All I have found so far about the legalities of bait in the Jordan (or Utah Lake) is that it's the only place where white bass can be used, haven't found anything about bluegill. Thanks.

Welcome to BFT. Bluegill are illegal for bait in all Utah waters. If you haven't done so already, you should get a copy of the 2013 Utah Fishing Guidebook and read it.

Great, thank you. I'll get a hold of one of those.

Kent already gave you the info about the dwr guidebooks. In general you can't use sportfish as cut bait or live bait for that matter. There are some rules that apply generally and then you have places like Pineview that allow cut bait (no whole dead minnows) but it can only be a one inch square with one piece of bait per hook.

See u already got the book link, step up.

Depending on the water, some places you can use perch, but not other panfish. I never got that. Your white bass while do well, pizza cuts on the sides.
I think the notion granted is on target. If it's got a limit, you probably can't use it, with exceptions

You can do well with carp strips, or minnows. I found cats loving on hunks of sucker. There's other minnow species allowed. Can check with Sportsman's, Cabelas, Smith and Eddie's they'll have frozen minners.
Good, look forward to hearing how you do. Welcome.
