They would be in the deep deep abyss of Bear lake so 200+ ft and good luck shanking or getting one toobite. Not easy to convince to hook one but TDT caught one in the mouth during ice season.

Actually they keep swimming around in huge clouds through the lake. You graph them when you're fishing for trout. I suspect you might be able to snag some if you get overtop of a cloud, but I've never tried. They don't disappear into the depths as the myth goes. Sonar kind of ruined that legend along with Bear Lake and Lochness being connected by an underwater passageway. Sorry to spoil the fun. Later J

They should be in full swing January 15-20. (Give or take a few days either direction)

My best guess would be starting around January 18th and going for about 10-14 days. If the lake freezes over they typically come in a few days early, but if its windy and open water they may or may-not come into shore where they can be dipnetted. However, if it is open water, you can catch they by snagging from a boat off the "rockpile" area. If it helps any, the official date for the "unofficial Cisco Disco" is Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Just remember this and you'll always be good: "The cisco are running on Martin Luther King day."

If you get out trolling with a graph you'll get to see them, but I think they must be much more difficult to snag in free swim mode than when they are spawning. Since very few are caught outside of the spawn they probably are just forgotten until January rolls around. I've watched trout shadowing the schools of Cisco so they are always in danger of being ate. Nice to have such a great food source for the trout. Later j
