Big Willard perch 11-09-13
#1
Got out and fished Willard today from shore with Tin-Can. After reading his report from last week about some nice cats, I thought it was worth a trip to see if it could happen again. Well it was not my lucky day for the kitties but TC had a good time catching some nice perch both over 12". He might have done better after I left but the cats did not want to be caught, up until I decided to leave. I enjoyed fishing with you TC, hope we can do it again.

I did not like the idea of getting a skunk, so after I left the North marina, I went to an area I know near the South marina that has produced for me every time this year. I had to make it quick so I dropped down and caught a small carp first, on the second drop I caught a small perch[crazy]. I can't remember the last time 3 perch were caught at Willard on the same day[Wink].

WH2, was glad to meet you and have the company today. Sorry didn't get any cats. But that's how it goes at WB, sure you know that well as I do. Those 2 Perch were a nice surprise today. They were the biggest I've ever caught anywhere in Utah, let alone WB. Water calmed down to glass smooth and the Carp were slurping pretty heavy up close to the shore line after you left. But all I got was a few tugs and worms stripped off so I left about 3:30.
Let me know how those perch taste when you get to eat them.

Hi Curt do you think it is still possible to launch at the North Marina?

Was at the north WB today. There were 3 or 4 boats launched and went on out to main lake. One was about a 20' Ski boat, didn't have any trouble.

Yea, it is fine, just as TC said. I launched there yesterday, just take it slow going out of the channel and go straight for 100 yds or so before you turn left or right.

icesore, I've never been a bow hunter, but those Carp were everywhere from 5 ft. of the bank to say maybe 50 yards. And I could see more jumping and splashing in spots all across the water.

I've never gotten perch at Willard, but I usually chase walleye or wiper, they easy to get into? Need to get the wife on the ice and I'm thinking perch through the ice is the plan.

Catching perch at Willard is tough, I don't know anyone that has ever targeted them and had any success. IMO you would have better luck catching perch at Pineview than Willard.

Yup. I'd rank perch as "accidental" catch at Willard. They're probably down in the "Other" category of fish that can be found there.

Pineview, on the other hand, is darn near paved with perch - almost all of them six inches long, due to their overpopulation, unfortunately.

As long as wr get into them, convinced the wife to hit the ice atleast once so to keep it fun for her, I'm thinking cemetery poi t and tons of perch.

Yeh Rocky, those 2 perch were for sure flat dumb luck and quite a surprise. Better than average size though from what I hear. I think those were number 2 and 3 Yellow Perch I have hooked at WB. Caught one on 31 Aug that wasn't quite as big, but close.

Well I hit Pineview on Monday and it was disappointing. I did catch 4 dink crappie, 4 perch that were almost 9" and one fat mud cat but compared to those hog 12" plus perch from Willard it was Sad[frown].

Curt, those look like they could make a nice meal. Not as long, but they appear pretty fat

Those four were not even close to what I got off those two big ones. Maybe 1/2 to 2/3 as much. They are full of eggs that is why they look so fat but not as much meat as I had hoped.

Haha, u can never hope for a lot of meat from 4 perch, unfortunately. What you need is the full 50 limit. At least 20 to have enough fillets for just a snack lol. With perch it's the flava rather than the amount of meat. They should just switch the regs back to no limit on perch rather than planting muskies and saugeyes to eat them. Pineview fished way better when there was no limit before good ol doug miller and his perch parties made perch popular. That 20 limit they switched to in years past caused them to crash and it never really rebounded as far as I've seen. It's not worth going to pine view for perch more than a couple times a year lol. Haven't bothered with the crappie for 7 years now. Too few of them to bother. Muskies just destroy the crappie.

Hey Curt, did you see the post TubeDude put up? Looks like he got some of the perch out of same area we did. They do look good...... wanted to go back to WB today, but snow and a puppy recovering from hernia surgery cancel that idea.
