Strawberry 11/9/13 New magic baits and new method
#1
Fished Strawberry yesterday with Kory and of course he out caught me (nothing knew there) but not by much. We were the first to launch at Renegade.

Went to the first area and never had to fire up the outboard again except to leave at the end of the day (just before sunset). Did I say that we like to make a day of it?

Early, they were right on the surface. Casting tubes tipped with cut bait (chubs or red sided shiners) high in the water column was effective for the first couple of hours. Casting a plain tube jig early would have probably worked just as well.

Kory, got the bright idea to try dropping his tube 5 or 6 feet under a bobber and we caught fish all day long using that method. We caught a few vertically fishing but probably not over 20 or so.

The two new "secret baits" are a bobber and an apple core (floating on the surface). The cutts hit both; although Kory got more hits on a pencil-style bobber than I did on the old standard red and white variety.

We didn't keep an accurate fish count, but it was well over a hundred, with only 3 rainbows (all invited home) and the largest cutthroat was 21 3/4".

Beautiful day, great company and the catching wasn't too bad either. Thank you to the kind man, at the boat ramp, who did all of the work getting the boat trailered, at the end of the day.[Smile] Most appreciative of his kindness.

Apple core?

Yes. It was just floating on the surface and several fish were biting it (or at least attempting to bite it). If I would have put a hook in it I may have caught a cutt.

Ok, my wife caught a Brookie on bubblegum once so I can see it happening.

I was fishing at the berry once and was eating peanuts in the shells. It was like chumming as the trout seemed to be following the shells to the boat and trying to eat them as well. It was funny to watch the trout yesterday hit the bobbers multiple times. Most of the time they finally got around to biting our jigs after they discovered they couldn't eat the bobbers. Never seen a fish try to eat an apple before.

Great fishing with ya Kent. Couldn't ask for a nicer day. It was also interesting to see the fish completely stop biting about 30-60 minutes before sunset, except for one fish at the end.

Apple core, interesting! Sounds like you had a great time! I was there yesterday fishing from the shore and had a great time. Love the berry this time of year!

Sounds like a good trip. We should have went to the Berry instead of Scofield.

That's not saying much for those that are still struggling at Strawberry.[Tongue]

when I fish from shore I'll throw out a tube under a bobber to cut down on snags as I twitch it back.
