The ice fishing contest is just about ready to start.
So before we begin I would like to hear out anybody's suggestions for changes to the rules. Post them here or PM me.
Thanks,
"Time to start the 2012-2013 Ice Fishing Challenge. Due to state law we can only have 49 people enter for this type of contest. Registration starts today and will close on December 23th or earlier if full. Entry money will be due by December 28th. Please be on time. Contest starts November 12th. Contest will end April 20 2013. Winners will be announced by April 30.
1. Five dollar entry fee again this year.
2. Must be a registered member of BFT to enter.
3. Points will be awarded by the half inch.
4. Must have a picture with the fish on the ground next to the tape, the BFT logo with your BFT username, or a photo of you (don’t need a photo of yourself).
You must have 2012-2013 on your BFT logo, including your BFT name.
There is printable logo at the bottom of this post. Pictures of fish in the air next to a tape will not count for points. All pictures must be taken at the lake.
5. Picture should be taken from end of ruler, ruler laid on the ground under/next to fish. Need to be able to see both ends of the tape.
6. Check that your camera’s date is set, photos will be judged as current based on their “creation date” in the file information.
7. Points will be awarded for up to eight fish.
8. Three fish must come from the following list. (Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, Bluegill/Green Sunfish pictures (grouped together), Bullhead Catfish, White Bass)
9. The other five can come from the Native or Nonnative sport fish as classified in the Utah 2012 Fishing Guide. There will be one exception. Burbot will also be allowed to count as one of the five.
10. Cuttbows will be classified as a Cutthroat.
11. Utah public waters only. Reciprocal lakes count as Utah waters.
12. You must post your own fish for it to get credit.
I can help anyone who has problems resizing or posting their photos. Please post your photos in JPEG format. Please do not post large pictures inline. If you want to post some to “tell your story” downsize, but a large entry photo helps confirm accuracy and measure (zoom). Please watch the glare – I need to read the numbers.
13. Posts must include species (common name) of fish, date caught, name of lake, and length of fish.
14. You must post the name of the lake from where you caught the fish. No abbreviations.
If you choose to you may leave the name of one lake out of your posts. All fish from this lake do not need the name of the lake posted. The name of the lake does have to be given to one of the moderators of this board in the form of a PM though.
15. Anyone harassing another contestant for posting the name of a lake will be disqualified.
16. Anyone found cheating will be disqualified.
17. Anyone disqualified forfeits their entry fee."

I only take photos with my phone and I dont think it sets the date on the picture. Plus I only post from my phone so I can't change the file name. So can this rule be removed or altered?

Thanks for running this upcoming Ice fishing contest, one thing I might suggest is to change the date from 2012-2013 to 2013 to 2014.

Just out of curiosity does an entry have be caught in the traditional sense of Ice Fishing meaning does one have to be on a lake and drill a hole through the ice vs fishing in river ?

Same my phone doesn't add the date either currently dont have a digital camera. What if there was a secret code you could add to your BFT logo like in the fly fishing contest.
The code would be release by the contest mod so guaranteeing recent pic

Change the date in the rules.
Also I think fish need to be posted with a week of being caught, this keeps other from hanging onto fish caught earlier in the season and waiting until the ice in rotten on those lakes so other can't compete fairly...example is catching tiger musky and waiting until the ice is rotten on pineview to post the picks. Some of us really like to compete and want a chance to beat the person in the lead.
It would also be nice to see burbot taken out. Most people have waters with different speices within some driving distance from where they live. Burbot is only found in one res and might be a long drive for someone to compete with those catching 30 in burbot...just a thought.
Can't wait to get started.

It absolutely has to be the traditional sense of drilling a hole through the ice in a lake, pond, etc.

I do agree with the "no sandbagging rule" idea. I opted to put that into my fly fishing contest and I was pleased with the results. I think it maintains interest and lets those who want to know where they stand against other competitors.
Is 2 weeks or 1 week more appropriate?
Burbot will remain in the contest.

i disagree with the non game fish i dont even like the burbot rule i dont like the burbot rule because it limits you to one lake to catch them and thats it

I don't see the need to remove Burbot from the contest when that specie has been part of the contest for many years. It makes no sense to punish those that care to take part in the contest and make the trip to FG. Or to punish those participants that live closer to FG than others simply due to the fact a few don't like the idea of an none game fish being included in the contest, or that many participants don't want to travel hours to reach FG. Why don't we simply band FG from the contest, would that make everyone happy? NO, nor does removing a species from the contest that has been apart of the contest for years just to suit a few.

I'm with u Coldfooter, Burbot was in before I took the reigns. I don't follow the one lake argument. What about Bear lake? Or Pike, Musky. No pike up north, and only 1 Musky lake left.
Why not disallow Wipers?
I don't care for adding carp. I think they fit well to have a slot in the cat contest.
But that's my 2c.
And yes I'd concur, ice fishing means fishing through a hole in the ice. I think the question of fishing from a dock, but through a hole was bantered around. Early ice at UL harbors for example.
I've got one ice rod rigged with a fly reel and sinking line. So is that ice flies?

I was part of the first contests back when only a few of us ventured out on thin ice for bragging rights. And also shared top honor with Randy, aka Hells Angler, yet I only entered 7 fish that year, all game fish. But I haven't taken part in the contest since burb have been allowed but not because of burbs being allowed. Heck I don't care if any fish species caught can be entered. After all ice fishing is just that, fishing though the ice, not game fish fishing though an ice hole.
Agreed
If we pull the plug on burbs simply because some people don't like them for what ever reason, or because burbs now only exist for Utah ice fisherman, as far as this contest, at FG and that is to far for some to venture, we just as well pull any and all fish species that now only exist in one body of water in Utah.. I can think of several.
Perhaps someone like myself who is able to ice fish daily for the next 5-6 months if I so choose should be band from the contest merely because I can fish more often that the next contestant. hmmm

Too bad I live in Colorado, or I would sign up. I fish in Utah as much as i can, but our perch lakes beat yer perch lakes.
Keep the Burbot in the tournament. If it encourages a few boys to drive east the otherwise would harvest any, it will be worth it.
