WOW, cold weather does make ice fast. Thanks for the ice update with pics Dave. Should be another 1" or so thicker by Sat.
Now just remember everyone, Mantua has lots of springs and you just can not be too careful that first time out on the ice.

If you need a second witness, I just drove by and it's true Mantua is capped. I thought I could see someone on the ice over by the knoll, but my eyes are getting old and it was getting dark. Crazy if there is 2" already, it might be fishable tomorrow at that rate. If not then Saturday might start the season for the brave, nuts and foolish crew. I agree with Curt be extra careful, maybe TD or Yote can post that map with a couple of the springs to watchout for. Later J

Ya I passed by riverton pond on the free way yesterday and it was open water but today it was all solid. Sad too see that pond closed in the winter. As well I checked my ice fishing/ fly fishing crapalooza and it was 2". So excited to go somewhere this sunday.

After talking to the guys at the Anglers Den in Ogden and hearing people were fishing Mantua today, me and some buddies are going to head up there and try to avoid falling in while at the same time catching fish. Wish us luck, I'll update when we get back

Good Luck and be careful... The South East bay has one night more ice, but watch for where the creek dumps in the ice is thin up there... I think there are some springs out in the middle of that section, but I don' t remember where to tell you exactly.. I'm sure someone will have made some tracks you can follow... Later J

Thanks, yeah I've always avoided the inlet area even in Feb. The holding pond drainage pipe usually is safe around early jan. I wonder how much fuller it's gotten since the fall?

Maybe I haven't watched that thoroughly, but I haven't known Mantua to drop with the severity of some of our other "natural" lakes.
There are some inflow areas beyond the inlet. The notion of "springs" has been debated, but the potential for methane buildup in such a weedy pond is for real.
One thing I'd avoid is crossing from west all the way to east. If you wanna get on the east side. Probably most typical is parking along the south dike, and taking the N-NE "path" toward the knoll, fanning out to - wherever.
Have wondered how the N. side is managed now. Does the "road" get cleared? Parkable - jump onto ice from the dock?

That was the maps I had in mind. Thanks for posting them Yote. Hopefully everyone can avoid the thin spots. Tried to rearrange my tackle tonight to get ready for ice. What a mess i make through the year. Still cant find what i was looking for. Oh well hopefully there will be something that will work. Later J

TDs to thank for the general map. Don't know I have "credits" on the other - though may be more debatable. Some "springs" may be inlets/outlets. And really - (should redraw) there was a serious man-eating hole if you swang west of the main path from the south dike. Don't know if it's standard.
Found some "springs" on Hyrum last year too. Burbling up. Hmmm. Maybe glad I'm not on an ATV....

Yote, I think I'm growing feathers today and turning a little chicken on trying Hyrum. I can't tell for sure, but I think it might have frozen over last night. Plus I have some things I really need to work on and this might be a good day to do it with the snow on the way. Sorry to back out. Later J

Just got back from Mantua. We fished off the boat ramp area with about 3inches of good clear ice in about 17-19 feet of water. Slow and steady perch/rainbows. There were some brave souls out in the middle, but where there are under currents the ice becomes thin pretty quick. The guys I was with are probably still out there, but I have stupid responsibilities like homework to take care of.
