ICE at SFCR, CJ, or Magic

Sorry guys, I am not gonna make it out today. My excuse is I need to cook something up for our Magic Valley Fly Fishers Christmas Dinner. Probably going to do my usual Dutch Oven Potatoes. Strike is still open. There are ice shelves forming in some of the coves, but I wouldn't walk on any of it yet...

West Magic Resort web site says the lake is frozen over. Doesn't say anything about how thick the ice is, though.

CJ- I would've thought that the Bruneau arm would sure be frozen with the cold weather we've had, but seems it isn't so based the report that just came in. Bummer, too. Matt, Dave, and I were considering heading down to CJ on Thursday, but based on the report here I guess maybe we'll head to Cascade.

Correction to the C.J. report. The Bruneau Arm is completely frozen over! I was there today (Tuesday 12-10-2013). The ice was 1.5 inch thick by the Cottonwood ramp but more like 3" in the coves and edges further east. Attached photo taken from Cottonwood looking NE.....

Good to know. That's a lot closer to what I was expecting with the cold snap. How did you confirm the 1.5 inches? Did you break through or did you drill a hole? What about the east end of the narrows?

I use an axe for my early season ice assessments. I saw solid ice into the narrows with some cracks and areas of overflow - where at some time the crack had allowed standing water on top. This new water dissolved the thin layer of white "snow" so that you could see it, however had frozen again so that the bottom line was the entire thing was solid - including up into the narrows as far as I could see...

The "snow" on top was probably frozen fog or something since it hasn't snowed since Saturday. Based on the temperatures and lack of a real insulation layer, this ice should get thicker in a hurry. I am thinking that people will be ice fishing by Friday. You could ice fish right now back in the boat parking area of the Cottonwood jetty.....

Hmmmm. Still trying to decide if I want to try it tomorrow. I see on another forum that at least one guy is heading out that way today. I'm anxiously awaiting his report. It will have a strong impact on where I go tomorrow.

Went out today to sfcr Roads good to Nortons with 5 to 6 inches of good ice. Milky ice around the edges with clear ice further out. Cleats a must. The water depth is really shallow and you have to get a ways out and its still in the 6 to 7 foot range.

I might be able to make that work! I did hear that I guy went through the ice last saturday and it has been awefully warm the last few days. I'm not sure the ice is up to it. Let's keep close tabs on ice conditions and see if we can get together.
