Hit Rockport just before 8:00 am this morning. Walked until I hit 41' - kept walking looking for deeper water and next depth check was 36'. Marked fish on the bottom so set up. First fish was a brown (I think) not a lot of color but it appears a brown to me. After that it was dink perch one after the other with a rainbow here and there on the other pole.
After awhile walked over to where Pikeman was fishing and tried my luck there for an hour or so but the only thing I caught was a piece of his smoked salmon. Well worth the move cause that stuff was amazing. Good luck getting the recipe though. He wouldn't even tell me what wood he used to smoke. Something about the only way to get the recipe "is if I die and you then marry my wife"[
]. Seriously good stuff though.
Left Pikeman and wondered back to my dinkster action. Set up the tent to escape the breeze and fishing slowed but the size increased.
Totals -
2 Browns?-Kept one that's in the pic if someone wants to help identify it - not a great pic but it'll have to do
5 Rainbows ranging from 12" to 15" - Much smaller then years past and much slower too - released all of them hoping for the 17"+ I'm used to getting regularly up there on the ice but no dice.
25+ perch - Kept some dinks for future bait chunks, the bigger ones filleted up.
Browns and perch all caught on gizzy bug and meal worm, bows on gizzilla and meal.
Left at around 4:30
Not bad for first trip out but I think fishing will be a bit harder there this year for trout and the large perch are outnumbered 6 trillion to one by the 4" variety.
Also, most fish (especially the large perch) were super light biters - Thanks to K2Muskie for the post on those spring bobbers a few weeks back. They are the bar none the best I've used.
