Jigger rods
#1
Looking to buy more ice fishing rods. Wondering if anyone has advice on type mainly like to fish for perch and trout. Whole family now wants to go, so I need more gear. Also wondering what works best for kids tip-ups or poles. Any advice is welcome.

Some of my most favorite rods are rods that I have added the metal strike indicators that extend out of the rod tip. I initially bought those just for perch fishing but have found that even a big trout will often just touch your jig lightly, so my main rods all have those indicators on them. So that would be my suggestion, give the indicators a try, they will supplement any rod you choose.

I would have your kids use rods instead of tip ups . Because with a tip up you have to land the fish hand over hand . I like Ugly Stixs for my Jaw Jackers . Cal ranch sells a Eagle Claw Combo that I like for bigger fish . The rod is 36 inches and Yellow , they are around 20 bucks for thr combo .

Steve I have 20 different rod and reel combos . I like a medium heavy 36 inch rod for fish from 2 pounds up . I have some 24 inch ultra lite for Blue Gill , Perch . And some in between . I take 9 different combos everytime I go out . Sometimes it is easier to change rods instead of lures .

I agree with most of what you said, but as I've changed my techniques and styles over the years, I've come to prefer the UL stuff for everything short of Lakers and possibly TM (not sure on the TM, cause I haven't caught one yet).

This is my preferred rod for everything else and is the rod that I used when I caught the 9.75 lber at Henry's a couple weeks ago. http://www.fishusa.com/Product/HT-Enterp...shing-Rods

I like the IB-24 and they are only $8. I'd trade them for any of the $15-20 rods in my case.

My suggestion is to get a few you don't mind losing. I lose a couple a year. The fish just keep pulling them through the holes. I guess that is what I get for using 6 rods and a 10 inch hole. And, letting the kids play around. [Wink]

I made my own ice rods for my kids. Old coffe table legs with rod tips glued in the wide end. Attach large handled reals with zip ties. They look real silly but the kids love them. With the large grip and big real the kids can operate them with gloves or mittens on and if they get broken or lost your only out a couple bucks.

Well if it were me I wouldn't put anything but an uglystik in kids hands. Its amazing what you can put those rods threw and im not just talking about fishing with them.

My preference of rods for ice fishing are high quality custom rods. Tuned-Up Customs is who builds mine. They come with a 5 year warranty and are by far, the best sticks on the market. Built by hand in MN, they come with REC recoil guides that don't freeze up in the cold. Worth the extra money, IMO.
