Mr Heater Troublshoot

Had a single tank top heater for a few years and LOVED it. Fantastic heater, always reliable and very convenient... up until it snapped in half when my sled flipped behind a 4 wheeler last winter at Flaming Gorge.:censored:

In April, I had a bonus and dropped some coin st Sportsmans on a bunch of camping supplies, along with a new tank top heater. On the box it looked like a few things were tweaked and improved and I was looking forward to using it on the ice.

Fast forward 8 months, and I finally broke it out of the box. Looked awesome.......then i try to light it. I was able to light it the first time for 45 seconds, but it didn't stay lit. Second time, nada. Closed everything and waited 5 minutes....nada. Unscrewed it, re-attached it and tried again. Nada. Got another propane tank and tried it on it. Nada. Tried again, absolutely nothing. The last few times I even put on the brass safety thing, just in case it might for some magical thing help, and it didn't.

I'm furious. Just out of the box, and nothing. At some point in the last 8 months I lost the receipt so now I have to HOPE I can exchange it.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong? Any advice? Here are the pics, which I took as I was gathering everything together to hopefully return it to Sportsmans.



Here on the front grill, you can see the only thing on the front that has been charred is the spot where i kept putting my lighter to try and light it.

Not sure if you can swap out the thermacouple on those. I have several Mr Heater burners and I have never had any issues. I assume you got a bad one. I would still try to take it back and swap it out for another--even without a reciept. The worst thing that they could say is "no". Good luck.

[#502800]There is a recall on model MH18B. I just checked to see if that was mine. Otherwise I would email Mr. Heater Co. and tell them your story. They might send you a new part, or a new heater.[/#502800]

You can try and adjust the thermal sensor out further into the flame. If this doesn't get hot the heater wont stay light.
Or the other end of this sensor which is the valve is bad. If its no longer under warranty you can buy the part from the the Mr. heater folks.

was out Saturday with a buddy who has the same heater and we were having the same problem, what we did was connected the thermo coupler wire that goes from the heater face into the small black box in the back directly to the one leaving the black box running to the gas valve. basically by passing the box, they are the slide on type connecters so we didn't cut the wires just unplugged them off the black box and taped them together. by doing this you are by passing the tip over safety feature and also the gas shut off if it goes out, so use with caution. but it got us by for the day he had used his all last year with no problem but it sounds like this is a pretty common deal with mr heaters

I don't know if it was the thermocoupler or what, but I was able to exchange it. Now all is right in the world.
