Went out ice fishing on Saturday and Sunday for the first time this year. So my buddy and I after cow elk hunting hit Current Creek for a few hours iced one tiger and only a few bites. left there and hit Big Sandwash for some night fishing to get skunked. Sunday after elk hunting we decided to hit Pelican lake. Glad we did we ended up icing over 60 between the both of us. Mostly caught bluegill and bass also a few sunfish. all lakes had 8inches of safe ice.
here a the pics enjoy.

Nice job on the bluegill/bass bite. Questions: Did you have to move around much to find fish or were they plentiful in the area you fished? Also about what depth did you find active fish?
The reason I ask is that we have had trouble finding schools of fish and seem to need to move around a lot picking off a few per location.

Got lucky we fished about 5 feet of water and did not move we moved once to see if we could find more fish. That was not a good move we went back to our old spot after about 15 minutes of not catching fish. and started slaming them again.

Thanks for the great report. I'm curious, did you drive around to the boat ramp? I was there at the end of summer and the water was very low. I didn't even try to fish. I hope the water level has come back up a little. Did you have to walk out very far to find 5 feet of water? I admit, I'm not real familiar with Pelican, and haven't ever ice fished it.

Thanks. Another question. I see you set up a JawJacker. How did it work out? I picked one up and haven't used it yet.

Thanks Randal801.
Mister the water is still quite low, below the reeds, but it is rising some finally. I spoke with one of the water masters the other day and they have the other reservoirs mostly filled so they are sending most of the water down to Pelican now. Hopefully the lake will fill the rest of the way.
It doesn't take much to find 5+ feet off the east shore but I don't think depth is the key. We were able to find as much as 8' but couldn't locate the schools of fish after many holes. From other reports, it seems that the schools are very localized, perhaps on isolated structures (weed patch, man made items, holes or humps). If you find a school of fish better stay with it and you may even want to GPS it.

I agree, we were there on Saturday and drilled holes at multiple locations before we found paydirt.
We found em in about 9 feet of water and it was lights out for 5-6 hours straight.
We lost one big bass right under the ice, but other than that they were all 1lb bass and smaller bluegill. It was a great day. We had fun noting the difference between the bluegill bite and the bass bite.

Which side of the lake were you fishing? I typically start on the east side or southeast corner and walk out. I've wanted to try other locations but I don't know where to park.

We brought snow machines so we covered a lot of the lake.
We started on the north side by the reed islands and didn't get anything, so we moved deep right out in the middle and caught 4 or 5 but it was still slow (8ft of water). So we went over near the submerged reed island on the east side and found em there. We found 9ft of water and it was on.

Any idea what your average size gill was? Did you get any over 10 inches long?
