Deer Creek - Soft Water
#1
Hey everyone! I always enjoy reading posts on this forum so that I know where to go and what to use. Therefore, I wanted to share.

Today, I went to Deer Creek and fished Walsburg Bay. I got there about 10:30 am, limited out, and was back in my track by 1:00 pm. The bite was fast and light at first but as the day progressed they started hitting it harder. Overall, I caught 5 rainbows (I let one go) and the largest was 18 inches and about 2 pounds (I did not weigh her). Yes, the 18 incher was a female (she was gravid). It is a shame that she could not lay those eggs but I needed some dinner. I missed 5 other fish and one of those 5 broke my leader. :-O Of course that was the biggest fish of the day. ;-) What caught fish for me was power bait off the bottom (~ 1 to 2 feet leader). I had to cast about 15 to 20 yards out there (I used light weights like 1/8 ounce) but I caught fish and had bites when I pulled my line in closer after casting.

Almost all of Deer Creek has open water. There was a little ice in the shallower part of Walsburg Bay (by the inlet stream) and you could hear it cracking around noon.

If all goes well, I'll be back Saturday with the girlfriend to catch more fish and fight off the weekend crowds.

Every evening I come home from work, I see tons of fish dimpling the surface, especially inside and around the buoys at the Dock of the Bay.

Nice report. Did you try any gear (spinners, jigs)?? I want to get up there again before the ice hits, but I don't typically use powerbait.

One thing you should know: the rainbows in Deer Creek are sterile. They produce eggs but they can't successfully spawn. All of the rainbow trout from Deer Creek are from stocking..so you can keep "spawners" even ones that are dropping eggs..

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to try that area on Sunday. I've seen a few people fishing there and now i know why. [Image: happy.gif]

Harlin,
Thank you and I did not try anything other than bait because I was catching fish. However, I did see a brand new rapala box that someone left on the shore [frown] so that could be a feasible lure option. Many fish were rising all over the bay. Typically, I have good results in this area (i.e., Provo river, DC, and Jordanelle) with rainbow and brown patterns (sinking rapalas).

Good to know the DC rainbows are sterile. I like eating fish but want to make sure we have fish for future fishing trips.

I'd love to hook into some DC walleyes but that's another battle for another time.
