Minnows
#1
I am just wondering where people get their minnows, what kind, etc.?

I always have trouble finding them! Do you catch them or buy them, where to buy them, etc. I live in North Utah County.

Cabelas has frozen minnows. The service station on the northwest of the roundabout on Lehi Main St. used to. Sportsmans Warehouse in both Provo and Midvale has them as does Fish Tec just off I215E and 2000E. in SLC.

I am new to this forum. I know you can get minnows at the 7-Eleven on 8th North in Orem. The Holiday in American Fork and the All About Food and Fuel in Lehi. If you can't get them there you can PM me. I have them at my home.

We get our red shiner minnows in the spring up at electric lake. Just throw out a few minnow traps while you fish and pull them out every half hour or so. Last spring I caught a 22" tiger trout with one of them while we were there. When you get home, put a dozen or so per zip lock bag layed flat in a single layer so they don't touch each other, and get as much air out as you can before freezing them. We're using those minnows now, along with chubs we froze the same way from Scofield. At Utah lake we get set up over a school of small white bass while ice fishing and keep a bunch and do the same with them for cat fish bait in the summer. We hardly ever buy bait. I learned from experience not to package too much bait in one bag or you'll just waste a lot each trip as they don't do well at all trying to refreeze. If we have a big group we just grab 2 bags. Now if someone could just tell me where I could catch some suckers for bait at Fish Lake so I don't have to buy that at sportsmans, we'd be set!

I bought a ten foot (5 foot radius) casting net for minnows:

01-9090 FITEC SUPER SPREADER SS750 CAST NET 5' 3/8"

(Link below)

I'm learning many styles and aspects of fishing including catching minnows and developing good casting net skills.

I also wonder if I pressure can minnows in canning jars, will they be as good as sardines and will their bones become soft like canned sardines and if a little vinegar helps to make the bones soft like sardines?

This is also part of my desire to target fish that bio accumulate less mercury as I increase my consumption of fish.
