No ice at Buckboard yet.It had a thin layer but blew of [frown]. You will have to go further north to find safe ice.
Forest Road 11 will take you to safe ice.

Don't expect ice improvements, as the forecast is not good. BLOWING, and not too cold.

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't trust any ice reports from the Gorge... it sounds silly...

But a lot of guys don't want anyone else out there on first ice so they will lie about ice conditions.... if there is 3" most guys will tell you it hasn't capped yet.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic but if you really want to know, the best bet is to drive out there and take a look for yourself. I have heard the bay at the Marina is capped but the main lake near there is not safe or capped yet. Like I said though, I don't really trust 2nd hand ice reports!

Worse case scenario you get down there and the ice is bad or non-existent, you can drive north and find good ice...

Best case scenario there are already guys fishing down near there....

The coves and marina around buckboard have safe ice but out in the main channel is open water. This was 2 weekend's ago when I went and really has not been cold so I'm sure the condition's are the same.

How is the burbot fishing? If there is open water is it still good to ice fish for them? We went last year for the tournament and had a blast but there wasnt open water then that I knew of.

Not sure on the burbot....I just started ice fishing the gorge last year and have alot to learn.I do hear from other fisherman that the area south of buckboard(next cove down)has some nice cliff, rocky area's and do well as well as up north in the firehole area.I have yet to try a nighter and catch them, just not quite sure on a specific area and people don't seem to talk much about where they are at.

There's burbot all over on the north end of the reservoir. Just look for main channel rocky habitat with moderate slopes, much like smallmouth bass utilize, and you can find burbot. There's probably more right places to be than wrong. The biggest issue this year is going to be a lack of ice, confining you to areas that are likely receiving lots of pressure. It would be more beneficial to try and find areas where other anglers haven't been.

There's still lots of burbot south of Buckboard (where the ice basically ends), but it may not cap this winter with exception to bays. This is basically the same situation the as in 2011-12 with the bulk of the reservoir still open water.

Good luck, Ryno
