Got a late start, had our holes drilled and lines in about 10 a.m.
I put my first line down with power bait just off the bottom in about 25 fow. My uncle was showing me how a flasher works, pretty cool, reminds me a video game. As I'm paying attention to the flasher, my dad yells over to my that my pole had fallen over. Luckily I had it in a holder, if I hadn't it would've been down the hole. Fish on.
It was a pretty steady day. Between the 4 of us we had a fish on the ice about every 5-10 minutes. Most fish were caught on power bait, but we also caught a decent amount of fish on several different types of smaller jigs tipped with meal or wax worms. White seemed to be the color of choice for the day.
Fish were 2:1 cutts over bows. Most fish were 16"-18" with a few smaller and a few bigger. We caught a couple 20 inch cutts, but nothing over 20" today.
We did best from 10:00 - Noon, I'm sure earlier probably would've been even better. After 12:00 we still caught a few, but it dropped off considerably.
The weather couldn't have been better. Clear and sunny skies all day, with only a slight breeze here and there. No slush whatsoever. If you head up, I would just echo what others have said... Try to get away from the crowds.
As we were heading back up the ramp we were stopped by the fish cops checking registration on the sleds. (we saw them writing quite a few tickets for expired registration). They didn't even check our fishing licenses or fish.
We asked them what they'd heard about the fishing and they told us most had reported slow to dead. I'm guessing most folks they had talked to were part of the city set up right around the marina. It was a great day to be outside and get some fresh air.
