scofield 1/25
#1
Hit scofield Satuday morning with my bro in law and 2 nephews. It was a balmy -1 degree when we got out of the car at around 8am and plenty of people on the lake as expected. I got some advice from fellow BFTer 1WolfPack which paid off. The one take away I learned from this ice season is to go shallow, if that doesn't work, go shallower late in the season.

Set up shop in 8ft of water in the dam arm. Probably could have had success even shallower but after hand drilling 5 holes through 12"+ of ice, we were having enough action to just stay put.

Pretty steady bite throughout the day. We ended up with about 30 fish iced, mostly 12-14 inch "torpedo" cutts, 2 tigers (biggest was 16") and some smaller rainbows. Overall a fun day for the kiddos. Could have had more numbers but better to let the youngsters lean how to set the hook and land fish themselves rather than hook and pass the rod. Would have had some pictures but the 18 yo nephew (who is inseparable from his smart phone like most teenagers are) dropped his phone down the ice hole!! HAHA! it's probably good for him in the end.

We tried an assortment of baits and jigs from salmon eggs, meal worms, night crawlers, ice flies, curly tails, floo fliers, but hands down the best combo was a paddle bug tipped with small amount of crawler. The next best was probably a simple half worm on a 1/16 oz or 1/32 oz white jig head w/o the jig on it.

This is pretty intuitive but earlier in the day the bit was significantly more aggressive and they'd stick with it. Around 10 it died off to just 1-2 taps, probably like curiosity bites and if you didn't set the hook they're gone.

Ahhh so you're the guy. The fish police stopped by for a visit and told us he just watched someone drop their phone in the lake. Did your nephew catch more fish once he was cut off from from his electronics?

How were the chubs in your area? I fished Madsen both Saturday and Sunday and only picked up one each day.

0 chubs. I'm not sure if they were there and just didn't hook up, but I switched to a pretty small ice fly with meal worm and didn't get any either.

Ha! the nephew actually curled up in his chair and fell asleep for and hour in rebellion then got up and caught some more fish.
