Bear Lake Fishing Report:
Bear Lake is now frozen and there were quite a few ice fishermen on certain parts of the lake this past weekend. However, there is still a lot of very thin ice where you can’t access it for fishing, including the rockpile! Ice conditions could change if any wind develops which could take the ice off the lake. The Bonneville cisco run has peaked and it should begin to slow down by later this week. By next weekend the cisco run is likely to be over. Anglers were able to dipnet limits of fish in under 5 minutes this morning at both Cisco Beach and the Utah State Park marina. Best dipnetting is coming from about 6:30-9:00am. Anglers who were ice fishing off the pump house area caught some nice cutthroat trout in about 50’ of water and anglers were catching cisco by snagging with jigging spoons in shallower depths. Ice anglers off Cisco Beach were also catching cutthroat trout and lake trout using tube jigs tipped with cisco. Be extremely careful of the vents/springs along the Cisco Beach area which can cause weak spots or even open water pockets on the ice! Remember, in order to keep a cutthroat trout from Bear Lake it must have a healed fin clip (usually the adipose fin). Cutthroat trout with all fins intact have to be released, including fish that are tagged with all of their fins. Consider releasing large lake trout in order to maintain the fishery. Lake trout can easily live to over 35 years old in Bear Lake. We will update the report either every other day or every day, depending on weather and fish-run conditions. PLEASE ONLY CALL AFTER 5pm each evening, in order to keep the business lines open during the day. 435-946-8501.
