Hey all! New to the forums and honestly new to fishing anything but Rainbow and cutthroat trout.
Looking to expand my resume I guess you could say and head down to fish lake this weekend for some perch, Splake, and with any luck a decent lake trout.
Seeing as how I've n[reply][/reply]ever fished any of those species I'm looking for advice, tips, tricks, and possibly (I know this last one might be asking more than most would be willing to share, but never hurts to try) your honey holes. I'm taking my wife and a handful of kids along. Most of whom can still count the number of fish they've caught in their life on their hands.
Another concern I have is the rainy weather we're supposed to have the next couple days, how will that impact the ice?
Thanks in advance for any input!
Happy Fishing.

First of all it is not going to rain down there, just checked NOAA and you will be fishing on top of snow, but the wind will probably blow it all away anyway.
Sucker meat works like a charm down there. Tip it on a jig and hang on!
Fish the shallow weed beds for perch, go deeper (like 20 feet of water) for bows and splake.
I love that place! Never left without at least 90 fish!

Excellent news about no rain. Sucker meat would just be sold at any local bait shop I take it? (Been a worms and powerbait only guy. Hah)
Sounds like they aren't too picky as far as jig type goes. Is there one that consistently works better than another? Or mostly trial and error till you find the hot one?
Thanks for the quick response!

Yeah you can get sucker meat at most fish shops. I heard some shops were out recently so I would call before you drive to one.
Fish Tech for sure has all the fish meat you could want. Yesterday I bought my stash of sucker meat for my up coming fish lake trip.
I bet any jig will work.
As for what I like......
1/32oz pumpkin pepper jig tipped with some sucker meat.
Pink fire tiger ice fly tipped with sucker meat.

I'm a big believer in preparation and information being 90% of fishing. Thanks for helping me (and my family) get ready for Saturday. I'll post the results when I've got them!
If anyone else had any secrets they're willing to impart I'm happy to listen!

Most people on the lake, are more than willing to help each other.[fishin]

I didn't even think about Sun screen, though Saturday should be mostly cloudy. I'll throw some in with my tackle when I get home tonight.
As far as using the perch meat for bait, it works well for all species in the water?

Perch will be right on the bottom 10'-20' deep. you will catch some rainbows while fishing for perch.
Bigger Splake will be out deeper,on edge of weed line.

Simple logic. Small bits for the small fries, big bits for the lunkers. Sounds like it'll save me a bit on buying bait before I head out too!
What depth should I be in looking at for Splake or Lakers? One side of the lake better than another?

Don't forget the sunglasses. The sun reflection can be a killer.

someone else will have to answer about dept for splake and lakers.
most people there can help you find the edge of the weed line.aprox.50' deep
the depth will drop off quickly.
I usually fish the south end. (about 15' deep)
2nd pull off.
(across from the little store.)
you can drive right to within 20' of the ice.
unload your stuff- then park vehicle.
walk out 150-200 yds. catch fish.
There is a bathroom in the parking lot also.

When people say "sucker" are they talking carp or the chub? Thanks.

They mean Utah Sucker. If they meant carp, they'd say carp. If they meant Utah Chub, they would say Utah Chub, or chub.

Not sure if your comment was to come across like I am taking it (like I'm and idiot), but sorry for the question. It was and honest question. I have heard people talk of a carp and say a sucker. I have also heard of the chub refered to as a sucker.

I've heard people refer to rainbows as cutthroat and lake trout as splake. If you've heard people refer to chubs as suckers, I would think that maybe you would help them out and explain the difference, like Fshrmn did for you.
As for bait, any of it will work. And, if you don't have any of it -- just get some meal worms and catch a perch or two, then cut them up and use them as bait.
Always remember: perch are bait! NOT food!!

This is exactly right for Fish lake. It really isn't that complicated down there, unless you want to make it that way.

(Roll eyes icon) If one expands their horizons, he can have the best of both worlds. In fact, I might just have a yummy plate of bait tonight.

I've heard perch are actually very tasty. I'm excited to give it a try (assuming I catch any) Thank you all for the help on this one. Saturday can't come quick enough.
There's a part of me that wants to spend some time hunting a nice Laker. Any suggestions there? Thanks in advance!

Luck happens. You never know when or where. You could catch a nice lake trout or splake while fishing mealworms for perch. You just never know.
With that being said, you need to make a decision: are you fishing for lake trout? or are you fishing for perch?
If you want a lake trout, then I would recommend to get yourself into water from 60 - 90 feet deep. Fish the bottom. Hopefully you have a fish finder to watch for fish. You should see some occasionally, but whether or not they bite is another story. You MUST have patience -- thus the decision to either fish for lake trout or perch. Fish deep, be patient, spend the time, and you might get a nice lake trout. If you lose patience, you'll find yourself catching perch.
The DWR is hosting an ice fishing clinic at Fish Lake on the 8th (I think ) of February this year. Maybe you could delay your trip by a week and go join in with them and learn a few tricks?
perch are bait.
