Porcupine Report?
#1
Has anyone been out to Porcupine lately? Are the Kokes hitting at all? Might try it tomorrow, will I need a plank? Any tips to help success? Thanks J

I was up there 3 weeks ago I found koks up top out about 250 300 yards from the front but it was slow and we didn't need a plank

Well not much to report, water is way low so its a long tough pull from parking to the ice. I think it looks like the water level is at least 50' down from high water. However there is still 85' left in places. Ended up barely missing the skunk, got one Koke. Seen lots of clouds of fish, most were 45' to 65' down. Did see a few at 12' to 25' and seen other individual fish with some real size moving around to check my lures out, but no hits. Don't know what they want, had my lures in the clouds of fish and they didn't want anything I was offering. One I caught came on a silver kastmaster. But it was just one, I kept using that on one pole the rest of the day without another bump. There were three other groups fishing by the time I left but they were too far upstream to see if they were doing any good. Well 4 hours for a minnow I don't rate it as very good. There is 20" of ice so get ready for a workout if you have a hand auger. The roads are snow packed and slick I'd recommend a four wheel drive with good tires. Where I was the fish quit swimming by about 11:30 so early was better for me by the dam. I moved four times today and my second spot in 85' FOW was best for numbers swimming by. Edges are dicey but you can cross without getting wet but I put a foot threw on the way off. Good luck if ya try it. Later J

Sounds like similar condition and luck as I had and reported on January 20th

Yup I think every report I've heard has been about the same. I used to do really well on Koke if they swam past I was catching fish, but not up there today I was really frustrated. Started second guessing everything I thought I knew about catching them. Tough ice year for me, guess I better go back to Hyrum and get some confidence back. Later J

Great post!

Hope I can get away this year to get up there and try for some kokes. They sure are tasty!

I tried by the inlet last year and go skunked about this time of year. Was frustrated with Porcupine.

I've found that you are more likely to have Kokes swim by at the dam, but they are all through the lake. Guess I'll have to troll it if I'm going to catch them. Later J

How long was the Koke you caught? I haven't fished the lake for 3 years or so because they were getting pretty small, wasn't worth the trip, thanks.

I didn't measure it but that is a five gallon bucket that it fits in the bottom of so 8-10" not sure of the diameter of a bucket. Not very big but about the same size as the bows in Hyrum but it was fairly fat so it was worth keeping to eat. If you got all 12 in a limit it would make a good meal for a family. Not like the Gorge Kokes that's for sure. Later J

Thanks for the response, a dozen 10 to 12 inchers is worth the trip for me, I like their flavor much better than the bigger ones from the Gorge. [fishin]

Plus they actually fight pretty good for their size. Any idea what to use jigging them? They didn't want any of my usual ice fishing goodies. Later J

I always preferred a small hot pink jig tipped with a waxie on an 8 to 10 in. dropper line tied below a flasher like a kastmaster with hook removed. Then drop lure into the school or just above, some times dead sticking worked the best some times a slow lift and drop. [fishin]

Thanks that's kind of what I use as well. Maybe they just weren't hungry. I have this switching lure bug lately so maybe I didn't try it long enough. Thanks again for the info. J

The wife and I are headed up to Cascade the 13th for a few days to try for some perch, I may have to give Porcupine a try when I get back if the ice is still holding up.

Good luck, I may try Porcupine again just to try and get rid of bad juju. That Cascade sure sounds fun, but I understand lots of people don't do as well as our BFT friends have. Probably good to study ahead if you don't already know where to fish. Good luck. J

I have a few friends on another forum that fish it that have given me some info so we will see how that goes, most people that are catching the big perch are pretty quiet just like the walleye bunch.
