FG ice
#1
Forecast looks fantastic for ice, with highs in the teens and lows in the negatives. Could be a good ice year yet, just later than normal. I would post a link to the forecast, but am not sure if that is against the rules. Next 5 overnight lows are -9, -5, 3, -8 and 2.

Anybody hit it this weekend, and can tell us any updates on the hardwater? I want to take four wheelers to Big Bend, but don't know if that is too risky for this coming weekend.

I was at holmes crossing the ice was 3-5" in the bays with open water in the middle @ forest road 005. The lake has capped further south and north. (just one stubborn part has stayed open) A few brave souls ventured out to the middle to find deeper water, so it is fishable!

Good luck and stay safe and bring cleats!!!

I drove up and fished on Friday and Saturday. Going up on Saturday morning, offered a good look of the reservoir and the mosaic of open water and ice. Check out the pic of some anglers fishing on the "edge" in Anvil Draw. That's open water in the bottom of half.

Like Isda, I found about 5-inches on the westside on Friday, in a bay south of Holmes Crossing. I found about the same on the eastside near Upper Marsh Creek, but some of the ice was broken and refrozen. There was still a ton of open water, mostly on the eastside. It will likely cap with this cold spell, but that means there will be thinner areas to watch for. There was still some open water in Big Bend, above and below Brinegar Ranch, and in Anvil Draw/Wildhorse. There was also quite a few pressure ridges on Saturday that were really active.

Hope it helps, Ryno

Those people in that pic are MUCH braver than I! I love to fish first ice, but am not quite willing to be that close to open water.

Then again, I'm fat.

Thanks for the updates. With the cold, unsettled weather this week, it will be interesting to see how the ice develops.

Oh sweet, I am headed up Feb 12-15th and hadn't decided if I was taking my boat or my 4 wheeler. Definetly going to take my wife out for some flaming gorge resort food in Dutch John. Thanks for posting about the ice.

I was planning on heading up for the Burbot Classic. One of my buddies had a death in his family so he had to cancel. If any of you are interested in joining our team pm me and I will let you know the details.

2 of us have experience with burbot, and the third is just a die hard angler who is excited to hit the Gorge for the first time. We will be camping, so no sissies need apply.

My marcum LX5 is arriving wednesday, so I am excited to have a flasher fishing for macs during the day.

Anyone been out recently and willing to talk about ice on the gorge? I see on the flaming gorge camera that the lucerne boat ramp is frozen.

Ryno's reply above from the Feb 3rd is probably be most accurate report we will have going into the weekend. Safe ice is in lots of areas, but open areas in the main channel, and thin ice in enough areas to make your bum pucker. You should be good in most areas close to shore north of anvil, just be safe.

The marina is locked up, but it's open in the main lake still. Same thing with Antelope Flat launch, iced in enough that you can't launch. Linwood Bay is capping over now, just not sure how thick. By the looks of the Weather Bug camera, Sheep Creek is capped. There's some ice starting to form near the dam too, but you can still launch a boat off Mustang Ridge. There's some shattered ice just in front the ramp, but not enough to keep you from launching.

I suspect all this new ice could get removed over the weekend though. They are now calling for highs in the 30s with winds out of the south at 10-20 mph tomorrow, and highs in the 40s during the weekend.

Good luck, Ryno
