Anyone fish Yuba today (2-10)?
#1
I'm considering making one more trip to Yuba while the ice is fishable. I'd like to know if anyone was fishing Painted Rocks today that could give me ice conditions.

Thanks in advance for any and all info on the ice. I know what it was like on the weekend, but I'm hoping someone was there today.

I went this afternoon. Getting on and off the ice was a pain. Got wet both times, very soft on the edges. Ice still was thick once I got on though, but still slushy on top.

Take a 12 ft plank with ya. Once you get on it's not bad! 10" ice 4" slush on top

I was there too yesterday at painted rocks. Caught one skinny guy in my first 10 min and didn't even pull him on the ice, unhooked at the hole and let him drop thinking it was going to be a fast good day. I was wrong! Sloooooww after that, I moved around a bunch but didn't find them. How'd it go for you? I was able to get on after throwing some stepping stones in the water. A plank is definitely needed but weather was awesome! No tent, no gloves needed.

Thanks guys. I went to Yuba this morning and got there early at 0630. I waited for enough light to see and I headed off across the lake from the boat ramp. It was all frozen this morning and getting on wasn't a problem.
When I came in at 1500 this afternoon the edges were soft and there is about 3-4 feet of slushy ice. I didn't get wet, but it was close. I found a spot about 100 yards south of the boat ramp where the ice was the strongest this morning. It was soft this afternoon but I was able to get across with a short jump.
A long board is needed for the soft edge unless it gets real cold fast.
I fished for seven hours and had one pike on but it got off before I could see it. It didn't feel very big. No other hits all day.

The ice away from the edge is fine. I measured at least 16 inches where I was fishing. The snow that had been a pain for dragging a sled has melted and frozen into the ice. The surface was frozen and crusty this morning and just a little soft in the afternoon. The next storm is going to be warm, so it will probably rain at Yuba. Be prepared for slushy conditions for the near future.

My next trip to Yuba will be later this spring with my boat.

Thanks for the report Mike. I hope the ice holds on a little bit longer. I would like to make one more trip to Yuba. I am looking forward to some spring pike action.

What do you guys think the access will be like this weekend for snowmobiles? I guess I could just drive really fast when coming off!!!

It's going to be hard to say for sure. If the conditions remain as they are I think you could get on OK in the morning if you find a spot where there is some solid ice cover close to shore. I'm sure you could run a snowmobile over the soft slush in the afternoon if you have enough speed. The problem could be that there's not a lot of snow on the ground near the lake in some spots. Pick your entrance and exit where there is constant snow on the ground. Watch the overnight low temperatures on weather.com. You can check current conditions if you search for "Yuba State Park". They use the Nephi weather conditions. If it's well below freezing, conditions should be good early in the day.

This next storm may be so warm that the current conditions could get worse. I would look for a report on Friday from someone who is there.
Good luck and let us know how you do if you get to Yuba.

Thanks for the report Mike, were you walking or using an ATV?

It was nice to meet you Mike! Sorry the fish didn't cooperate.

My Dad and I fished Yuba yesterday as well. We caught 3 hammerhandles between us and lost one other fish. We were on a wheeler, but if I go again I don't think I'll be taking the atv as the edges are definitely getting soft.

Fishing was slow, but it beat being at work!

Hey Curt,
I was on foot. I walked about 1/2 mile across the lake and a little bit to the northwest. My wife decided I don't really want or need an ATV. She says I already have too many toys. [frown]

There really isn't such a thing as too many toys, is there?

It was good to meet you Jake and to spend a little time for a chat. I saw where you came off the ice near my truck on Tuesday. I was able to jump the gap and I didn't go through but it's looking likely it will get worse before it gets better.
