Abu Garcia fishing reel repair
#1
Recently, I happened to look at a clearance table at a Smith's Marketplace and they had three Abu Garcia fishing reels on clearance for a great price. I grabbed all three of them. They appear to be solidly (although heavy) built reels. One of the reels has a defect that I need to fix. It works fine at times but at other times it doesn't engage when I turn the handle. You ought to try reeling in a fish by turning the spool with your thumbs! I tried it and wouldn't recommend it. Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so do you have a recommended fix? The reel is model No. 60.

My friend had a similar issue with his Abu Graica reel - after much scratching our heads - we discovered that the reel was actually engaging but the spool of line was just spinning on the reel spool. He had not put backing on the spool and just filled it full of braid so you couldn't notice the spool was actually spinning but the braid was staying put. Hope this is your cheap and easy to fix. Kent, if you would like me to take a look at it you can stop by any time. I know abu baitcasters pretty good inside and out. they have a very good parts department and their help is very good, you can get every part for all their reels.

Thanks Craig. I will double check that, but because I have it loaded with mono filament I doubt that is the problem.

Tried that and didn't help, but I think you may be on to something because it doesn't feel like it is engaging.
