After getting a meeting in Ogden out of the way today, I was able to sneak a few hours in on the river and swamp to start trying for that contest winning kitty.
First I tried the river to see if I could pluck some crappies out of a few good holes and snags. I didn't get any, but I did have a few experiences, good and bad.
The good thing (I think) was that I saw three different turtles sunning themselves on the river bank. I have never seen turtles on the Bear before and to see three in one day was a real treat. I guess they wanted to enjoy the warm sunny afternoon too!
The bad thing(and this really just p----s me off), was the sheer amount of garbage that the PIECE OF S---, scumbag, lowlife trash has scattered all over up and down the river! I seriously saw where they had taken enough crap down to the river that they thought to bring garbage bags to put some of it in, but then just left it to be torn to hell by critters and most of it was just tossed about without any regard for others property! I try hard to respect others land and really appreciate it when I'm lucky enough to get permission to access the river across private land and to think that these jack asses ruin it for us just makes me red in the face furious! I can't even describe my level of disgust! Makes me want to start a local group that trades trespass priveleges for cleaning the river bank, maybe call it the Organization for Utah Rivers and Streams (O.U.R.S.). Who knows, maybe I'm just in a mood or something.
Anyway, after that experience I went down to cutler itself and pitched out a big juicy crawler, now the action starts. Turns out I was mugged for my bait by about a dozen mudcats and three channel cats. Two channel cats were about 10" or so. Dinks! The third one was about 16" and put up a fun little fight. Nowhere near anything for the contest, but the weather more than made up for the lack of size. I was fishing in current about 3-4' deep using a night crawler under a bobber letting it drift with the current. The deeper water gave me no love, not even a nibble.
I think that the real fun is not too far off , a few weeks or so and we'll start pinning them down to their habits.

Can I just give a giant THANK YOU for your post?!!! ]
As a land owner/rancher, dealing with the public has got to be one of my least favorite things to do. Words like disrespectful and arrogant come to mind most of the time. While there are plenty of fine folks who are sportsmen, some sure try their best to ruin things for all of us. I appreciate greatly you speaking up. From unregulated ATV use, to litter and human waste left everywhere (Even a cat will cover up its own leavings), to cut fences and unattended campfires, it sure seems that some people have no regard for others or the land. Pretty dang and really frustrating to me as both a rancher and hunter/hiker/fisherman/outdoorsman. I tip my hat to ya for caring enough to speak up. THANKS!

No problem! Everything you mentioned was exhibited in a 50 yard stretch not to mention the entire 1/2 mile I witnessed. I really wish there was something that many of us could do to show that there are those of us who DO appreciate the generosity of land owners and realize that is a priveledge that than be revoked at any time. I wish there was a way to EARN the permission by deed so that these scummy pukes would be run off while the rest of us who truly care are rewarded. Makes it easier on the land owner too so that they don't have to police their property as often.
I really do appreciate the long suffering of those that allow us to tresspass, it must be hard.

It isn't hard at all with decent people. It's the other type that take the fun outa things. I really think most landowners who ranch don't need any help from sportsmen work wise, just an attitude of respect that sure seems lacking these days. Such is life. Atleast folks like you give me a little hope.[ ]

well said both of you. (I didn't even have to edit...)
One of the things I find frustrating too is the notion that I can bring an extra bag and haul off the collection of crap with sure certainty that the next time I visit the spot, it will be back as it was, by the same inconsiderate sons of female dogs that trashed it in the first place. Certain I am that they would not even notice the area had been cleaned since their last trashing session.
I mean how hard is it really to carry out that worm canister when it's empty? Cigarette butts are NOT biodegradable. Caps, cans, bottles - all the rest.
There's a crew of carper who do an annual (I believe?) cleanup out Cutler way. I was amazed at the loaded green dumpsters. Granted some it debris from up-river, wood, boards, logs. Some might be agro bits that blow or get knocked in. But clearly much is pure trash, left by nothing but the very same.
Was driving out to Benson one time, my son rolled down the window and tossed a bag or wrapper or something along the way (fast food snack). I stopped the car, made him walk back and get it. Yeah, he was pissed. I know I'm just such a mean father, I mean HOW could I do that to him.

I love that quote. I need to send it to my son in Virginia. He thinks I'm strict and that I preach to him excessively.
I really do love this river and enjoy every moment on it I get. There is something new every trip( like the turtles), and the fishing usually kicks butt!

Ya know I've lived in Benson almost my whole life and been on the river lots of hours. Last summer I seen my first turtle ever out there. I don't know where they came from but its cool to start seeing them. Glad to hear you seen more than one. It is an amazing place, that's why I enjoy just floating with the current down through there. Of course with my fishing pole busy. But I usually see wild turkey, deer and tons of birds and mink and different critters.
The trash is terrible lately, we will likely get our scouts out soon to do some cleaning up, but its a mess and we need to bust these pigs. If the sheriff would write a couple litter tickets I think we would see an improvement in people's behavior. Especially if they did a sting so people thought no one was watching and they caught them. Needs to happen because it seems to be getting worse.
Thanks for the fish story as well. Later J

It's not just Cutler/Benson, but Mantua and especially Hyrum Reservoir as well.
Not sure why this generation thinks it's okay to trash the great outdoors like it's their personal playground.
That's cool what you did with your son, Yote. More parents need to step it up and BE parents IMO.

I was out at Benson Ramp fishing with my kids on Saturday. We picked up three grocery bags of trash as we fished. This is the dirtiest I have seen in there. It kind of reminds me of fishing at a dump. I think the problem is people getting drunk and forgetting where they put there beer cans and bait containers. By the way all we caught were carp.

Guess we need to all become jerks when we see people litter and go make a scene until they clean it up. I know I'll try taking a bag with me and see if I can help the problem by picking up a little, but it won't get better until they quit doing it. Sorry to hear its bad elsewhere, thought it was just catfishermen. Maybe if enough of us start pushing things will get better. Lets hope. J

Hey thanks for cleaning up, I know what ya mean about the dump feeling. Maybe if all the rest of us do like you did we can get things nice again. If your suggestion about drinking is true maybe the sheriff can write a big ticket as they go to leave. I'd prefer they just clean up their actions, but if they don't, make it painful. Thanks again for the clean up. Later J

Glad to hear about the turtles. I grew up in the northeast where turtles are abundant, so it's always a treat to see them.
I'm not so thrilled about the trash, and I have to agree, it seems to be getting worse. It's really frustrating to have areas closed off because of a handful of slobs. I think I prefer the carp to these scum suckers.
