Cutler Snow kitties! 3/27
#1
So, after work last night I found myself looking at fishing videos on my phone and wishing it wasn't snowing and got the bright idea to give Mother Nature the bird and make the hour long treck to cutler to try the years first night time catfishing.
It was really out of sick determination to prove that even in a nasty, cold, snowy mess that I could find some catfish that wanted to play, so armed with some flathead minnows and night crawlers, my son an I headed out to freeze! The decision was made to bank tangle since we would only be fishing for a couple hours or so and motoring around on cutler in a storm sounded pretty foolish.

When we got out to the lake, we did a quick assessment of the wind direction, where the channel came closest to a wind blown shore line and decided to pitch our baits out there. The thinking was that like so many times in the past, if there is wind in your face pushing bait toward shore then the kitties will be there to slurp up the easy pickings.

We hadn't had our lines out for more than a couple minutes and had the first hit, a little mud cat. For the next couple hours it was pretty fast and steady for a mix of mud cats and channel cats. We caught probably a dozen channel cats in the 10-12" range and one that was 22" and if course we have the story of the big one that got away.

I had a hit that almost relieved me if my fishing pole ( took it half way in the water) and as soon as I grabbed it and felt the weight of it, I got really excited and thought that THIS could be my first contest fish! Well I fought it to the surface enough to see it twice, the second time only 10' from shore and flopping on top. It was a channel cat alright, a great big, heavy set, wide headed channel cat! I've caught a lot of big cats in my day and this one ranked up there. I know that excitement and "the big one that got away" situation tends to make the story better than it really was, but I'm guessing the weight to be well above the 10-12 pound mark! It was absolutely bigger than the biggest one my son caught a couple of Sundays ago and his was 29". It was probably in the 31-33" range and really chunky!
So anyway, like I was saying, he took a dive and next thing I know he wasn't moving and there was a very solid sort of feeling on the end of the line. I'm thinking that he wrapped around a rock or stick or something because when I let the pressure off, he would start tugging and I could feel him still trying to get away, but he was as stuck in this battle as I was. I gave him some slack and played the waiting game for about 15 minutes or more, periodically checking to feel if he was still there and at one point I thought he freed up and I'd get him in, but alas, it was not to be and after I felt him yanking really hard I felt it pop free and I pulled in my line with the hook gone and a twisted, frayed end about halfway through the length of leader.

I swore a few times unfortunately and fished a bit longer before giving up and heading home. I did take a couple picks to show the typical little channel cat and the 22" dinner kitty, but I didn't get to take the pic with my BFT logo next to the one that got away! Blast!!
Oh well, I know he's still in there and most likely in the same general spot for now so I'll go for him again on Saturday most likely.

The point of all this though is that they can still be caught in crappy weather and just knowing a little about where they feed makes all the difference on bites or no bites. So far, I've only had one trip to the swamp this year and not caught a channel cat so I'm positive the drawdown didn't screw with them much and the body condition has been chunky and healthy.

Sorry about yours getting away!! I know that same sick feeling from my last time out- got mine half way in and he surfaced twice before coming unbuttoned. I just didn't get a good hook-set, and I was left cussing to myself. Guessing mine was in the 30"+ range as well, and I don't expect anyone to believe me of course.

As we both know, they are in there awaiting. Next time!

Definitely a crappy feeling knowing its on the line, but also knowing that its going to get off because of something that you can't see and had no knowledge of to avoid. However, it was still a fun battle and if I always won it wouldn't keep my interest.......as muchSmile

I thought about how it is that its always the big one that got away, but it dawned on me that I probably lose 10-1 little fish to big, but what kind of story does that make?

This is the year for the Bear and Cutler to beat the southern water, I know they're in there!

Hookset, or bad knot? [:p]

Yup, just like every other year.

Glad you gave Momma Nature the bird and went fishing anyway. Some times ya just gotta say, well - what ya gotta say.
Tomorrow looks promising, hope to get on or near the water enough for some good wrastles myself.

I've had a few on when fishing over a log, and they KNOW where the exit is! Gets a bit ridiculous to be leaning over a log, with your whole pole bent underneath - up to hilt in water, hoping to bring 'er back over to the wild side.
If you're out and about tomorrow, shoot me a note, maybe we can cross paths.

I think you're right though, if there's two kinds of fish least likely hurt by a drawdown, it'd be cats and carp.

Glad to hear it broke off though. If not - I mighta gone noodling!

You don't know how close I was to wading, but after dropping out of sight once while wading it duck hunting, I though I would show my son that I'm more wise that I used to be (especially when its colder than a witches broom stick out)! I know I'll be over there tomorrow at some point and I intend on doing a little fishing for at least a couple hours or more. If I am gonna fish, I'll drop you a PM so I can get you that five spot. I think if I do fish I'll start out by going and dipping some fatheads at the diversion.
Maybe some shrimp will work tomorrow, I just feel like I'm using steak to fish for hamburger, but a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do to have a shot at the bigguns!
I've been seriously thinking of playing the waiting game with a huge chunk of carp during a night fishing expedition in the very near future.

As to your question about a bad knot or hook set, I'd have to say neither. It was missing the first foot or so of line above the hook. Looked like it got twisted around something and finally wore through or just plain snapped the line. It was maddening.

Just noticed I have some pics from last year on march 30th with my boys on all nighter from the boat on Cutler. It was great this time last year also. Pics are below. Shows what one can expect at times from the swamp!

Been there and done that and it is painful. I've had a couple bigun's like that on and gone that I sure would like to have had a closer look at. Oh well, that's what keep us going back.

Better luck next time... up to 30 inches.[Wink]

The best is yet to come... but the south will prevail!

It's and old joke with Lava and me, or is it that I'm old, and his measuring skills are a joke. I get Confused. Mr Palomar himself doesn't understand that even a 5lb fish can put 10lbs or torque on the line with a solid thrust. So his 4lb mono might be fine for ice fishing for perch and troutlets, but when you're getting serious with the big boys, a solid double digits of braid can be a good friend of mine.
And cats aren't line shy.

Though many of mine come on 8 or 10 lb line or leader. Often lashed with an improved clincher.

If you are passing through Logan, Roundrocks was cleading out there ice gear. Still have a tub of Maniac plastics, plus a few more at a screaming 80% off. Got me a Shapell ice tent. Might have to go pop it up on an island some night, and see if more than mudders will come bite! (One of last years adventures)

Lava, Andy and I are going out in the am. You working or playing? I might bob around Cutler a bit later. Nice night cats. I need to work over my electrics, get my lights ship shape.

That's why ive never had a fish break my line/knot in 3 decades (YES i'm getting old). I understand torque well, and polymar knots even better [Wink]

Have fun in the wind today ( Isn't that a 4 letter word Mr Moderator?)

Unfortunately for me I won't be fishing till midday. Got a couple pressing chores this morning.
The wind will suck, but I'll just try to take that lemon and just make lemonade. It might stack some fish on a wind blown point or something. We'll see I guess.
I'll definitely have to check out Roundrocks and see what's left.

Didn't you just post something about having hooked up THE BIG ONE, but it broke off? Hmm - selective memory in your old age too. (ya whipper snapper!)

If you've been tying that knot for 30 years, dontcha think it's time to learn how to spell it goodly?

Click to see a tutorial. They had some 20lb ice-braid at RR - if you're not too late. Only 50 ft. Not enough for Bear Lake (so I learned the hard way!)

And yes, WIND is a 4 letter word, it was kinda ugly today, but we made attempts anyway. Just no casting a fly or bobber INTO the wind on this out.

And yes - I've got to be a wise-ass in my old age. And no - I didn't wait until I was old to get practiced at that.

Breaking Off and Bad Hookset are two different things old man. Yes i can call u that because you're older than me, and my best yrs are behind me.
Thanks for promoting that knot. It never fails. Do you use it or do u tie a different knot?

Maybe where you are fishing, but I sure haven't seen a fish on my line since the drawdown... So I think it's very locational... One spot I couldn't miss on last year, I spent a couple hours Saturday without a nibble trying the proven methods for this time of year.... I think they are exploring the areas that were dry and some have fish and others are very empty still.... So be happy with your spot, I think the fish from my spot must be hanging out there... Still waiting for a post drain tug... Later J

We'll for me it's been pretty good but very spotty on then off then suddenly on again... Been trying a few new baits with some success but the worm has done well as it usually does in the spring.
Boated this one on Saturday thick and healthy

Sweet fish. Thats the way it's been for me too this year, but I'm finding fish everywhere I've tried so far so I think the draw down is just a hickup.
