Trolling tips?
#1
On Wednesday my buddy jdawg and I decided to hit Willard bay to take the boat out for the first time this year. Neither one of us have ever been trolling before so needless to say we didn't do so well the first time out. We tried pulling rapallas and spoons but no luck. At first the water was white capped but as the day went on the wind died down. It turned out to be a fantastic day. Im sure part of the reason for not having success was the recest cold snap we had earlier in the week. If anyone is willing to offer up some tips on trolling that would be greatly appreciated. We plan on taking the boat out quite a bit this summer. Im sure soon we will figure it out. Also has anyone had luck trolling with bait?

Trolling at Willard is the easy part - catching fish at Willard can be a challenge. Trolling at Willard can be as simple as throwing out your favorite shad colored plug that dive anywhere from 2' down to 12'. Willard is not very deep (rarely over 14') so down riggers are not needed. Some guys swear that you have to use planer boards to get your offering out away from the boat but I disagree with this. I have caught more than I want by not using them. My magic trolling speed is about 2 mph and at this speed you can catch Wipers, Walleye, Catfish and even Crappie if your lucky. Since Willard does not have much underwater structure - I would recommend that you keep trolling until you find the fish. Good luck and don't forget the bug spray!
