Utah Lake finally
#1
Finally a good day with no wind on Ut. Lake. Knocked the poop out of the cats. Had two on at a time a couple of times. Water is only 52-3 degrees, down from 57 before last weeks storm.

Caught 'em on carp meat and a couple on crawlers. Ran out of carp meat and hoped to catch or shoot a couple but no luck. Never saw any carp movement at all. Too cold.

Best today was a 28 incher but also nailed a couple more in the mid-20s. Caught most of 'em in Goshen Bay by "the tree". Most were in 3-4 feet of water.

As long as the weather holds good I will be taking up residency out there. Tomorrow I will be at Bird Island. Watch for pic of my first 30+ incher.[Wink]

The real fun is about to begin. Let's go get 'em!

Nice job on the kats!

I was up on the spur this morning looking for carp and saw nary a one. We were wishing we had gone to Utah lake instead but it sounds like we didn't miss much. Need some more warm and calm days!

I wish someone would shoot a few Carpies out of Deer Creek. They are podded up on the surface all over the place pre-dawn up there.

If I could figure out a way to shoot out of my tube I'd add a bow to my tube fishing gear.

C'mon lay that fish flat. That's borderline insulting.

Ain't nothin' easier! Just gotta shoot Yahi or Chuckchi Siberian Eskimo style. Hold the bow horizontal with your bow hand palm up. Pull the string back toward your face in the crook of the opposite bent thumb.

So... did the Bird Island thing today. Not so good. Water is colder, 52 degrees, compared to about 56 in closer to the reeds. Still managed 6 or 7 cats but nothin' longer than about 25 inches. Had to use crawlers, shrimp, and white bass cuz I can't find any carp. Nothing moving today. Couldn't even ketch a carp on a worm. Maybe the Loys have removed all of them from the lake. Needs to warm up a bit.

Catmaster -- Tuff to get those cats to strike the right pose for a picture. Getting the tape, the logo, and the fish all lined up for a good shot take multiple tries. I just take lots of pics and hope one of them will show the right length. Takes practice.[Wink]

Spring and Master-- I ain't no Ishi. Nice how-to instructions on bow shots but no help to me. I borrow a small 30# bow from a gkid and have it with me in the boat. Trouble is the bow is a right-hand and I'm one of those defective right handers with a left master eye. When I shoot it is comical and possibly dangerous. My effective range is about 10 feet. I usually leave the shootin' to my crew members.

I'll be after the cats with a full crew tomorrow so maybe we can find both cats and carp.

Sixty degree water can't be too far away..... please.

Well, still jealous of the catching. I'm still at a count of maybe 20 nice bluegills and a couple bass in 6 trips this spring. Cats are next!

Also, post early tomorrow, because I might join you after work. Though I forget how to get to Goshen Bay, sounds like I can hit the outside edge of the bulrushes at this point about anywhere.

Springbuck-- Fished Bird Island again today in the early a.m. and then moved in to the reeds about 9-ish. Did better at the island this time but nothing big. Best was a 25 incher caught by gkid.

Caught 4 or 5 in close to the reed/phrags in only a foot or so of water. I think you could get some action anywhere you could reach the edge of the reeds between LB and Goshen bay. Water temp in closer to shore was 58 degrees. The carp are starting to warm up in the reeds and should be bow-able soon.

Lost a big one today near the island. Never saw him but he gave me a tussle like no other this year. Got him right up to the boat where he came unbuttoned. Had a full crew with me so I couldn't say any bad words but I did shed tears. I'll get 'im next time.

Weather permitting I'll be back after 'em Monday. Gotta find some carp; still my favorite bait.

Good luck.

Hey BLK, I had a couple questions for you. 1. Do you float your bait under a bobber, or fish on the bottom? Weight or no weight? 2. How big are the chunks of carp meat that you use?

That fish was an easy 29. Just felt like you were messing with us.

FMF-- I do both. If I'm in an area with lots of rocks like Bird Island I like to fish under a bobber. When I'm fishin' a mud bottom I like to fish on the bottom with no weight. I like a 6/0 Octapus (sp?) hook and about a 2x3 inch piece of carp. I keep my carp meat in a plastic bag and I like to leave as much blood and goo in the bag as I can for flavoring. Carp is my favorite bait with white bass second.

Lots of guys use different rigs but this one seems to work best for me. The mudders don't seem to bother a bigger bait as they often do with crawlers or smaller baits.

Good luck to ya.

Catmaster-- I stretch 'em for every inch I can but probably couldn't get 29 out of that one.

Between you, Yote, Lavaman, Sethook and others up there I've been expecting to see a 30+ cat any time. You guys were puttin' up some big ones the first few weeks. We're a little slower down here in the south but we'll ketch up.

I say there will be a 30+ cat posted up by mid-May. Could come from the north or the south at any time as the waters warm up. But..... in the end, the south will win.[Wink]

Get 'em!
