Man was it windy! Had not seen surf like that for quite awhile. Wind was extremely strong.

My friend caught his limit just an hour before the wind hit. We arrived 5:45pm to cold nasty winds. First hour only a few missed bites but who could really tell in the crazy winds but the bites or what we thought were bites kept us shivering on the shore. Second hour wind calmed down just enough to actually get a decent cast and we got our first 2 wipers. the next 30 minutes we managed to catch 4 more wipers. All wipers were about 17 inches or above. A few with alot of girth to them, even the skinny one was about 17.

Oh forgot to mention: Ran into a fellow BFT Gumbky at the lake. He has been providing me with good advice on the wipers and channels cats. We ran out of mussels trying for the first 4 wipers we caught and Gumbky was kind enough to give us 4 more mussels and would not even take the money I offered him. Needless to say those 4 pieces of bait led us to the next 2 wipers in our bucket completing our limit of wipers. Thank you Gumbky.

Pick from last nights catch is the one on the table.
Pick from a week and a half ago are the ones on the stringer and grass.

Good things come to those Die Hard Fisherman I guess!

Congratulations on a great outing. Any chance you have the date wrong on your subject line?

If you would not mind, what type of set up are you using for your mussels? Bobber? On the bottom? Slow retrieve, still fishing?

I love eating Wiper to and thought this may interest you. If you bleed them out by plucking a gill it really makes a big difference when it comes to table fare. The nasty blood line that Wipers are known for is almost eliminated. Just a FYI.

I use a number1 bait hook but get the strong ones, then a slip sinker with leader about a foot from the sinker. Basically the same set up I use for cat fishing. And just sit and wait. Some people hold their rods but I like to set them down with rod pointing up. Sometimes they will hit twice before being hooked and if you set it on first bite while holding you will lose the fish and the mussel. Hope this helps

What are the mussels you are using and where can you get them? We are going to try willard for the first time tomorrow and trying to figure it out. We will be out on a boat, though.

Thanks for the props man. But it's all you guys. I could have gave you 10 bags of mussels and you could have not caught anything. You gotta give yourself some credit. Sometime my friends do the exact same thing I do and I tell them it's "user error."
Sorry we didn't get to chat longer I was on the phone working as you saw my lines weren't even in the water yet when you guys were leaving.
As we spoke earlier, nada but wiper city and no cats. Was very nice night. Wind calmed down, full moon, clear skies, and noting but stars. Stayed till 2am and got tired of the mice running around trying to get at the mussels lol.
But get at me some time and we can do some midnight fishing.

Pre-cooked, not raw. Raw are too flimsy and really are hard to keep on your hook. Even the garlic and butter ones work but are a little pricier. But you may have to resort to those sometimes because they usually sell out. I had to go to 5 different Wal-marts one time and they all were sold out so I ended up purchasing the g&b at winco.
Wipers are some high class fish lol.

BTW, the shelled ones I bought at the Great China Market down on 90th s. In Sandy worked fine for me today.

So if Wallys is sold out look at Asian Markets or a seafood specialty shop. I know that there are some in Ogden area.
