Millsite on the tube
#1
I fished Millsite Reservoir today from my kick boat for three hours using fly tackle. I used a medium sinking line (#3) and size 4-6 leeches and crystal buggers in olive and Canada blood. The water temperature was 51-53 degrees and the visibility in the water was 3'-4'. The reservoir level is at 81% full and coming up slowly. I caught four splake, four cutthroats, and two rainbows. All of the fish were between 12" and 15" long. Most of the fish were hooked in 10' - 18' of water while paddling and stripping the line every once in awhile. The fish seemed to be in the upper 8' - 10' of the water column. The water was calm and the air temps were in the 50's. Nice day!

Well that looks pretty inviting. Nice and calm at Millsite? Where the trees grow sideways?

Bonus.

Miss that place. Glad the fishing is on the up and up, (and the water level too).

The Sad thing is they are going to replace the spillway structure, raise the dam 4', and remove some of the inlet side silt starting this fall. That means it will be drawn down to just a river channel until 2015. So if you want to enjoy some decent fishing you will need to plan your trips while there is still some good water.[:/]

If you had joined the fly comp you would be in the lead for the species prize for the largest splake. [Wink] Still time to register.

Sounds like if they are really gonna draw it down I had better try it this year. Thanks for the report.

There are some good sized fish in there but most are in the 12" - 16" range. We have caught some fish between 2-3 pounds last year. There are splake, cutthroats, tigers, rainbows, and a few browns. It usually fishes good most of the summer because the water stays pretty cold. It fishes good for most any type of tackle you want to use. I only fish it with flies so I can't help you with any other tackle suggestions. Leech patterns, wooly buggers, and soft hackles all work well on a sinking fly line. If you are camping there you can also try Ferron Reservoir, Willow Lake, Wrigley Reservoir, or Duck Fork Reservoir. They are all within about 25 miles of Millsite. Good luck when you go.
